- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the compression means is further characterized as two opposing compression rollers.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the water is applied in an amount of at least about 20% by weight, based on the weight of the bentonite clay.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein both the primary carrier sheet and the cover sheet are woven sheets.
- 9. A method of fabricating a geosynthetic clay liner, on a manufacturing line, said geosynthetic clay liner including a carrier sheet, a cover sheet and a layer consisting essentially of granular bentonite clay, having a particle size distribution such that more than 90% of the clay particles are between 4 mesh and 16 mesh, and water disposed therebetween comprising the following steps:
- (a) depositing bentonite clay on the inside surface of the primary carrier sheet;
- (b) applying water to the bentonite clay layer disposed on the inside surface of the primary carrier sheet to form said layer consisting essentially of said granular bentonite clay and water;
- (c) traversing the primary carrier sheet and said layer consisting essentially of said granular bentonite clay and water underneath the cover sheet;
- (d) depositing the cover sheet on top of said layer consisting essentially of said granular bentonite clay and water so that the inside surface of the cover sheet engages said layer consisting essentially of said granular bentonite clay and water; and
- (e) compressing the primary carrier sheet, said layer consisting essentially of aid granular bentonite clay and water and cover sheet together by traversing the primary carrier sheet, said layer consisting essentially of said granular bentonite clay and water and cover sheet through a compression means to apply a pressure in the range of about 45 to 85 pounds per linear inch, said pressure being sufficient to adhere said layer consisting essentially of said granular bentonite clay and water to the primary carrier sheet and cover sheet, with structural integrity as a cohesive unit, without needle punching, and without ah adhesive other than water.
- 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising the following step before step (c):
- transversing the primary carrier sheet against a knapp lifting roller means to provide upwardly protruding knapp on the inside surface of the primary carrier sheet.
- 11. The method of claim 10, further comprising the following step prior to step (d):
- transversing the inside surface of the cover sheet against a knapp lifting roller means to provide downwardly protruding knapp on an inside surface of the cover sheet.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the compression means if further characterized as two opposing compression rollers.
- 13. A method of fabricating a geosynthetic clay liner, on a manufacturing line, said geosynthetic clay liner including a carrier sheet, a cover sheet and a layer consisting essentially of granular bentonite clay, having a particle size distribution such that more than 90% of the clay particles are between 4 mesh and 16 mesh, and water disposed therebetween without the use of adhesive material except water, the method comprising the following steps:
- (a) spraying water on an inside surface of a primary carrier sheet to provide a wetted inside surface of the primary carrier sheet;
- (b) transversing the wetted inside surface of the primary carrier sheet against a knapp lifting roller means to provide upward protruding knapp on the wetted inside surface of the primary carrier sheet;
- (c) depositing said granular bentonite clay on the upwardly protruding knapp and the wetted inside surface of the primary carrier sheet to provide a bentonite clay layer on top of the primary carrier sheet;
- (d) spraying water on the bentonite clay layer disposed on top of the primary carrier sheet to provide said layer consisting essentially of said granular bentonite clay and water disposed on top of the primary carrier sheet;
- (e) spraying water on an inside surface of a cover sheet to provide a wetted inside surface of the cover sheet;
- (f) traversing the wetted inside surface of the cover sheet under a knapp lifting roller means to provide downwardly protruding knapp on the wetted inside surface of the cover sheet;
- (g) transversing the primary carrier sheet and said layer consisting essentially of said granular bentonite clay and water underneath the cover sheet;
- (h) depositing the cover sheet on top of said layer consisting essentially of said granular bentonite clay and water; and
