Claims
- 1. A method of manufacturing a magnetic head unit having a plurality of transducing elements arranged in a housing, comprising:
- providing a substrate having a plurality of transducing elements and associated bonding pads arranged in a row;
- covering the transducing elements with a silicon cover plate having a surface facing the transducing elements and also having a groove arranged through the surface so that the groove is disposed above the bonding pads, and further arranging the cover plate to be in a good thermally-conducting relationship with the transducing elements;
- removing material above the groove in the cover plate to expose the bonding pads; and
- arranging the resulting assembly in a housing such that the cover plate is in a good thermally-conducting relationship with the housing.
- 2. A method as claimed in claim 1, comprising in addition the step of selecting the cover plate to have a size such that said covering step leaves at least one end transducing element of the row uncovered.
- 3. A method of manufacturing a plurality of magnetic head units, each unit having a plurality of transducing elements arranged in a housing, comprising:
- providing a substrate having a multiplicity of transducing elements and associated bonding pads arranged in parallel rows, each row having a plurality of the elements and pads;
- covering the transducing elements with a silicon cover plate having a surface facing the transducing elements and also having a pattern of parallel grooves arranged through the surface so that the grooves are disposed above the bonding pads, and further arranging the cover plate to be in a good thermally-conducting relationship with the transducing elements;
- removing material above the grooves in the cover plate to expose the bonding pads;
- severing the resultant assembly into a plurality of strip-shaped magnetic head subsassemblies; and
- arranging each subassembly in a housing such that the cover plate is in a good thermally-conducting relationship with the housing.
- 4. A method as claimed in claim 3, comprising in addition the step of selecting the cover plate to have a size such that said covering step leaves at least one end transducing element of each row uncovered.
