Claims
- 1. A method of manufacturing a composite structure made from materials of different types mechanically joined to each other, said method comprising the steps of:
- preparing a first material having a first joining surface;
- forming at least one recess having an overhang surface in said first material;
- preparing a pair of second materials each in the shape of a plate;
- fixedly mounting said second materials on said first joining surface of said first material, with first ends of said plates of said second materials opposed to each other with a space therebetween above said recess in said first material;
- filling a third material into said recess and a space between said opposed first ends of said second materials to form a built-up weld; and
- machining a portion of said built-up weld such that an outer surface of the filled third material is flush with outer surfaces of said second materials.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, further comprising providing said opposed first ends of said second materials with flanged portions projecting inwardly of said recess in said first material.
- 3. The method according to claim 2, further comprising providing second ends of said second materials with respective inwardly extending beads, and wherein said first material has side surfaces in which are formed recesses with which said beads are engaged to mechanically join said second materials to said first material.
- 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein said forming a recess comprises the steps of forming a groove having raised portions along two sides thereof by rolling a formation roll having circumferential ridges on said first joining surface of said first material, and forming a recess of groove shape having overhang side surfaces by rolling a cylindrical roll on said first joining surface to level said raised portions.
- 5. The method according to claim 4, wherein said formation roll is provided with a circumferential surface along which a plurality of recesses or protrusions are formed at intervals.
- 6. The method according to claim 1, wherein said forming a recess comprises the steps of forming a groove having a bottom surface with an intermediate protruding portion and having raised portions along two sides thereof by rolling a formation roll having a circumferential groove of V-shaped cross section on said first joining surface of said first material, and forming a recess of groove shape having overhang surfaces on both side walls to provide a fork-shaped cross section by rolling a cylindrical roll on said first joining surface to level said raised portions.
- 7. The method according to claim 1, wherein said forming a recess comprises the steps of forming a groove having raised portions along both sides of an opening of the groove by rolling a pulley-type formation roll on said first joining surface of said first material, deforming said raised portions inwardly centrally of said groove by rolling on said first joining surface inclusive of said raised portions a roll having a circumferential groove of triangular cross-sectional shape with said triangular groove confronting said raised portions, and forming a recess of groove shape having overhang surfaces on both sides thereof by rolling a cylindrical roll on said first joining surface inclusive of said groove so as to level said raised portions.
