Claims
- 1. A method of manufacturing a web exhibiting a plurality of surface energy gradients, said web having a first surface and a second surface, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a sheet of polymeric material, said polymeric material having a first surface energy;
- (b) feeding said sheet of polymeric material onto a forming structure;
- (c) subjecting said sheet of polymeric material to a pressure differential sufficient to urge said sheet of polymeric material into conformance with said forming structure and to fracture said polymeric material so as to form discrete fluid passageways communicating with said first and second surfaces; and
- (d) applying a plurality of discrete, discontinuous, microscopic depositions of a material having a surface energy less than said first surface energy to said first surface of said web.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein said comparatively low surface energy material is applied at a level of between about 0.5 and 8.0 grams per square meter.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 wherein said comparatively low surface energy material is selected from the group consisting of silicone materials and fluorinated materials.
- 4. A method according to claim 3 wherein said comparatively low surface energy material comprises a silicone material.
- 5. A method according to claim 4 wherein said silicone material comprises a blend of a silicone resin and a crosslinker.
- 6. A method according to claim 4 wherein said silicone is cured by exposure to UV.
