Claims
- 1. A punch cooperating with a die, the punch being movable relative the die for drawing a thin sheet having a relatively low rigidity into a cavity in the die, wherein
- said punch comprises a core section, insertable in said cavity during the drawing, made of a rigid material and an elastic wall section made of an elastic material and surrounding said core section,
- said die is formed with a radiused corner at a mouth of said cavity,
- said elastic wall section has a freely exposed portion spaced apart from said radiused corner, the cross-sectional area of said elastic wall section being larger than that of the mouth of said cavity in said die,
- means for moving said punch into said cavity of said die with said thin sheet therebetween with said freely exposed portion of said elastic wall section entering said cavity so as to cooperate with said radiused corner and depress said thin sheet over said radiused corner such that said thin sheet is drawn while the surface of said thin sheet which is opposite to a face of said thin sheet which is brought into contact with the radiused corner of said die is depressed over said radiused corner of said die by an elastic pressure of said elastic wall section of said punch substantially throughout the drawing, thereby preventing creation of wrinkles on a formed article.
- 2. The punch as claimed in claim 1, in which said elastic material forming said elastic wall section is rubber whose hardness is from about 70 to 85 in accordance with ASTM D 2240 Durometer A hardness test.
- 3. The punch as claimed in claim 1, in which said freely exposed portion of said elastic wall section of said punch confronting said thin sheet is in the form of a taper.
- 4. A drawing machine comprising
- a punch, and a die having a cavity formed therein corresponding to said punch, said punch being movable relative the die and comprising means for drawing a thin sheet having a relatively low rigidity into said cavity in said die to manufacture a formed article,
- said die is formed with a radiused corner at a mouth of said cavity,
- said punch comprises a core section made of a rigid material and an elastic wall section made of an elastic material and surrounding said core section,
- said elastic wall section has a freely exposed portion spaced apart from said radiused corner, the cross-sectional area of said elastic wall section being larger than that of the mouth of said cavity in said die,
- means for inserting said punch with said core section partially into said cavity of said die with said thin sheet therebetween with said freely exposed portion of said elastic wall section entering said cavity so as to cooperate with said radiused corner such that said thin sheet is drawn while the surface of said thin sheet which is opposite to a face of said thin sheet which is brought into contact with the radiused corner of said die is depressed over said radiused corner of said die by an elastic force of said elastic wall section of said punch substantially throughout the drawing, thereby preventing creation of wrinkles on the formed article.
- 5. The drawing machine as claimed in claim 4, in which said elastic material forming said elastic wall section is rubber whose hardness is from about 70 to 85 in accordance with ASTM D 2240 Durometer A hardness test.
- 6. The drawing machine as claimed in claim 4, in which said freely exposed portion of said elastic wall section of said punch confronting said thin sheet is in the form of a taper.
- 7. The drawing machine according to claim 4, further comprising
- a blank holder means for operatively holding edges of said sheet against said die during the drawing.
- 8. The drawing machine according to claim 7, further comprising
- a bolster,
- said punch is connected rigidly to said bolster,
- cushioning means connects said blank holder means to said bolster.
- 9. The drawing machine according to claim 4, wherein
- said core section has a lower end insertable into said cavity,
- said elastic wall section has an upper cylindrical outer periphery of a diameter larger than that of said mouth of said cavity and a lower frustoconical outer periphery, constituting said freely exposed portion, adjacent to and narrowing in a direction towards said lower end of said core section to a diameter smaller than that of said cavity, said frustoconical outer periphery is deformably directly engageable with said radiused corner with said sheet therebetween during the drawing.
- 10. The drawing machine according to claim 9, wherein
- said lower end of said core section is made of the rigid material and forms a flange extending radially outwardly, and an upper side of said flange engages a lowermost, narrowmost portion of said elastic wall section.
