Claims
- 1. The method of fabricating a heat exchanger which comprises the steps of: heat-forming edge portions of holes in a plastic sheet having a plurality of holes to extend through and line holes in an adjacent metal sheet having holes which register with respective holes in said plastic sheet; inserting respective plug means in each plastic-lined hole before the plastic lining of the hole has cooled to limit diametrical reduction of the plastic-lined holes; removing said plug means from said holes; and entering the end of a respective tube through each plastic-lined hole sufficiently soon after removal of the plug means from the hole that the progressive diametrical reduction of the plastic-lined holes allows said end to be entered through said plastic-lined hole but then causes the plastic-lined hole to grip and fixedly locate said tube relative to said metal sheet.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said plastic sheet comprises a fluoroplastic.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said holes in said metal sheet are circular.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said holes in said plastic each have an initial diameter less than the respective holes with which they register in said metal sheet, and wherein said step of heat-forming comprises forcing a heated die against said edge portions of respective ones of said holes in said plastic sheet to extrude plastic through the holes in said metal sheet with which said respective ones of said holes in said plastic sheet register.
- 5. The method of claim 4 which includes the step of retracting said die from said plastic-lined hole before the plastic lining the hole has cooled.
- 6. The method of fabricating a heat exchanger which comprises the steps of: heat-forming edge portions of holes in a plastic sheet having a plurality of holes to extend through and line holes in an adjacent metal sheet having holes which concentrically register with respective holes in said plastic sheet, thereby to form a plastic-lined metal sheet assembly; inserting plug means in each hole before the plastic lining has cooled to limit diametrical reduction of the plastic-lined holes; spacing a pair of said plastic-lined metal sheet assemblies fixedly apart and parallel to each other; removing said plug means from said holes; and entering an end of a plastic-covered tube successively through a plastic-lined hole in each of said plastic-lined metal sheet assemblies sufficiently shortly after removal of the plug means from said holes that the progressive diametrical reduction of said plastic-lined holes allows said end to be entered through said plastic-lined holes but then causes said plastic-lined holes to grip and fixedly locate said plastic-covered tube.
