Claims
- 1. A method of producing a high strength, high toughness martensitic stainless steel comprising the steps of: preparing a stainless steel having a composition consisting of, by weight,
- C more than 0.16% but less than 0.25%, Si not more than 2.0%, Mn nor more than 1.0%, Ni not more than 2.0%, Cr from 11 to 15%, Mo not less than 0.5% but less than 3.0%, Co from 12 to 21%, and the balance Fe and incidental impurities;
- subjecting the stainless steel to a solution heat treatment at a temperature of 950.degree. to 1150.degree. C.; quenching the steel; subjecting the steel to a sub zero treatment at a temperature of -50.degree. to -100.degree. C.; and subjecting the steel to a tempering at a temperature of 120.degree. to 450.degree. C.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the stainless steel has a composition consisting of, by weight,
- C from 0.17 to 0.23%, Si more than 0.25 but not more than 0.8%, Mn not more than 1.0%, Ni from 0.25 to 1.5%, Cr from 12 to 13%, Mo from 1.5% to 2.5%, Co from 14.5 to 16.5%, and the balance Fe and incidental impurities.
- 3. A method of producing a high strength, high toughness martensitic stainless steel comprising the steps of: preparing a stainless steel having a composition consisting of, by weight,
- C more than 0.16% but less than 0.25%, Si not more than 2.0%, Mn nor more than 1.0%, Ni not more than 2.0%, Cr from 11 to 15%, Mo not less than 0.5% but less than 3.0%, Co from 12 to 21%, V from 0.1 to 0.5%, and the balance Fe and incidental impurities;
- 4. A method according to claim 3, wherein said stainless steel has a composition consisting of, by weight, C from 0.17% to 0.23%, Si more than 0.25% but not more than 0.8%, Mn not more than 1.0%, Ni 0.5% to 1.5%, Cr from 12 to 13%, Mo from 1.5% to 2.5%, Co from 13.0 to 16.5%, V from 0.1% to 0.5%, and the balance Fe and incidental impurities.
