Claims
- 1. A zinc oxide sintered compact body obtained from a method comprising the burning of zinc oxide varistor composition consisting essentially of, as oxide components zinc oxide at 78 mol-% or more, magnesium oxide at 0-20 mol-%, bismuth oxide at 0.1 to 2 mol-%, TiO.sub.2 at 0.1 to 2 mol-% and antimony oxide (as Sb.sub.2 O.sub.3) at 0.01 to 0.5 mol-% at a programming rate of 175.degree. to 500.degree. C./hour in the temperature range of from 650.degree. to 950.degree. C. to form a primary phase of a solid solution of zinc oxide spinel, and subsequently at the programming rate of 30.degree. to 500.degree. C./hour in the range of from 950.degree. to 1300.degree. C., wherein said sintered compact body is operable at a short wave pulse of 2500A.
- 2. The zinc oxide sintered compact body of claim 1, wherein the zinc oxide varistor composition is provided with cobalt oxide as (CoO) at 0 to 3 mol-%, nickel oxide at 0 to 3 mol-%, manganese oxide as MnO at 0 to 3 mol-%, manganese oxide at 0 to 20 mol-%, chromium oxide (as Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3) at 0 to 0.5 mol-%, tin oxide (as SnO.sub.2) at 0 to 0.5 mol-% and at least one substance containing aluminum or gallium which forms an oxide during the firing process at 0 to 50 ppm, for forming a solid solution of zinc oxide spinel essentially having the formula
- Zn.sub.3-x (Sb, Ti, Sn, Cr, Mn).sub.x O.sub.4.
- 3. The sintered zinc oxide compact body of claim 1, wherein the firing temperature in the range from 1025.degree. to 1200.degree. C. is maintained for a period in the range of from 2 minutes to 100 hours.
- 4. The sintered zinc oxide compact body of claim 1, wherein a binder is added to the composition in an amount of 2 to 10 wt-% and the composition is press-molded prior to burning.
- 5. The sintered zinc oxide compact body of claim 1, wherein a binder is added to the composition in an amount of 10 to 50 wt-% and the composition is formed into a thin film by a dicoater method or a doctor blade method prior to burning.
- 6. The sintered zinc oxide compact body of claim 5, wherein the thin film is formed into a laminated chip for the burning process.
- 7. The zinc oxide sintered compact body of claim 4, wherein a debinder process is preformed in an oxygen-containing atmosphere at 350.degree. to 650.degree. C. prior to performing the burning in the primary phase temperature range.
