Claims
- 1. A process for converting the lubrication system of an internal combustion engine from a system using an oil containing metallic and chemical friction modifiers, to an oil substantially devoid of such modifiers, comprising the steps of:
- A) adding sufficient amounts of a solvent and a perfluoroethylene resin to the existing oil in the lubrication system of the engine to remove oil residue from the surfaces within the lubrication system, and to coat the surfaces with perfluoroethylene resin;
- B) circulating the oil, solvent and perfluoroethylene resin throughout the lubrication system for a time sufficient to remove oil residue from the surfaces within the lubrication system of the engine, and to coat the surfaces with perfluoroethylene resin;
- C) evacuating the oil, solvent and residual perfluoroethylene resin from the lubrication system of the engine; and
- D) adding oil substantially devoid of metallic and chemical friction modifiers to the lubrication system of the engine.
- 2. The process according to claim 1, wherein the oil, solvent and perfluoroethylene resin are circulate throughout the lubrication system for at least about one hour to remove oil residue from the surfaces within the lubrication system of the engine.
- 3. The process according to claim 1, wherein the solvent comprises an aliphatic naphtha solvent.
- 4. The process according to claim 1, wherein the perfluoroethylene resin comprises a polytetrafluoroethylene resin.
- 5. A process as defined in claim 1, wherein the oil added in step D is a mineral oil.
- 6. A process as defined in claim 6, wherein the oil is a refined petroleum motor oil.
- 7. A process as defined in claim 1, wherein there is a further step of running the engine.
- 8. A process of preparing internal surfaces of a lubrication system of an internal combustion engine for lubrication of the system with a mineral oil optionally containing metallic and chemical friction modifiers, whereupon the engine can be run on mineral oil containing no modifiers, the process comprising the steps of:
- A) adding sufficient amounts of a solvent and a perfluoroethylene resin and mineral oil to the lubrication system of the engine to remove oil residue from the surfaces within the lubrication system, and to coat the surfaces with perfluroethylene resin
- B) circulating the oil, solvent and perfluoroethylene resin throughout the lubrication system for a time sufficient to coat the surfaces with perfluoroethylene resin;
- C) evacuating the mineral oil, solvent and residual perfluoroethylene resin from the lubrication system of the engine; and
- D) adding mineral oil substantially devoid of metallic and chemical friction modifiers to the lubrication system of the engine.
- 9. A process as defined in claim 8 in which said mineral oil in step A is a refined petroleum oil.
- 10. A process as defined in claim 8, in which the mineral oil in step A has metallic and friction modifiers.
- 11. A process of preparing internal surfaces of a lubrication system of an internal combustion engine for lubrication of the system by coating the internal surfaces of the system, the improvement comprising:
- A) adding sufficient amounts of a solvent and a perfluoroethylene resin and a mineral oil substantially devoid of metallic and chemical friction modifiers to the lubrication system of the engine to clean the internal surfaces and coat the internal surfaces with the resin when the solvent, resin and oil are circulated throughout the lubrication system when the engine is operated.
- 12. A process as defined in claim 11 in which the resin comprises a polytetrafluoroethylene resin.
- 13. A process as defined in claim 11 in which the mineral oil is a refined petroleum oil.
- 14. A process of preparing internal surfaces of a lubrication system of an internal combustion engine for lubrication of the system with a mineral oil that contains no metallic and chemical friction modifiers, the process comprising the steps of:
- A) adding sufficient amounts of a solvent and a perflurorethylene resin to the existing mineral oil which is substantially devoid of metallic and chemical modifiers in the lubrication system of the engine to remove oil residue from the surfaces within the lubrication system, and to coat the surfaces with perfluoroethylene resin; and
- B) circulating the oil, solvent and perfluoroethylene resin throughout the lubrication system for a time sufficient to remove oil residue from the surfaces within the lubrication system of the engine, and to coat the surfaces with perfluoroethylene resin.
