Claims
- 1. A method for preparing a collagen-polymer conjugate suitable for administering to mammals, which method comprises:
- providing an aqueous mixture of collagen molecules, said mixture having a concentration of about 3 to about 100 mg/mL collagen; providing a solution of synthetic hydrophilic polymer molecules, wherein
- each polymer molecule has at least two reactive groups capable of forming a covalent bond with an available lysine chain present in said collagen molecules; and
- mixing said aqueous mixture of collagen molecules with said solution of synthetic hydrophilic polymer molecules to yield a reaction mixture having a hydrophilic polymer concentration of about 0.1% to about 50% by weight, thereby forming covalent bonds between said collagen molecules and said hydrophilic polymer molecules, said covalent bonds effecting crosslinking of said collagen molecules.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said hydrophilic polymer comprises polyethylene glycol having a molecular weight of about 400 to about 20,000.
- 3. The method of claim 1 which further comprises:
- casting said reaction mixture into a desired shape during said crosslinking.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said shape is a membrane or a tube.
- 5. The method of claim 1 which further comprises:
- applying said reaction mixture to a solid support during said crosslinking.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein said solid support comprises a catheter.
- 7. The method of claim 5 wherein said solid support comprises a stress-bearing bone implant.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein said reaction mixture is vigorously agitated during said mixing, providing said collagen-polymer conjugate in the form of a particulate.
