Claims
- 1. A method of preparing a composite chromatographic sheet-like article comprising a polytetrafluoroethylene fibril matrix and non-swellable sorptive hydrophobic particles enmeshed in said matrix, the ratio of non=swellable sorptive hydrophobic particles to polytetrafluoroethylene being in the range of 19:1 to 4:1 by weight, said sheet-like article having a net surface energy in the range of 20 to 300 milliNewtons per meter, said method comprising the steps of:
- (1) blending one or more non-swellable sorptive hydrophobic particulate materials in the presence of an amount of polar organic masking agent selected from the group consisting of alcohols, acids, and amines, in an amount sufficient to allow rapid wetting of the surface of the particulate, the blending taking place in the presence of sufficient lubricant water to exceed the sorptive capacity of the particles, provided that the volume ratio of water to masking agent does not exceed 3:1;
- (2) adding, with stirring, to said mixture an aqueous emulsion of polytetrafluoroethylene so that the resulting mass has dough-like consistency;
- (3) mixing said mass in an intensive mixer at a temperature between 50.degree. C. and 100.degree. C., for a time sufficient to cause initial fibrillation of said polytetrafluoroethylene particles;
- (4) biaxially calendering said mass, while maintaining water at a level near the absorptive capacity of the particulate, between a gap in calendering rolls maintained at about 50.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C. to cause additional fibrillation and consolidation of said polytetrafluoroethylene particles while closing the gap between the calendering rolls with each successive calendering operation, for a time sufficient to produce a composite chromatographic article having a net surface energy in the range of 20 to 300 milliNewtons per meter;
- (5) drying the resultant sheet.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein said non-swellable particles are inorganic oxide.
- 3. The method according to claim 1 wherein said non-swellable particles are an organic compound.
- 4. The method according to claim 1 wherein said non-swellable particles are a polymer.
- 5. The method according to claim 1 wherein said non-swellable particles are at least one of silica and zirconia.
- 6. The method according to claim 1 wherein said non-swellable particles are silica.
- 7. The method according to claim 1 wherein said non-swellable particles are chelating or ion exchange particles.
- 8. The method according to claim 1 wherein said particles further comprise a layer of covalently bonded organic coating.
- 9. The method according to claim 1 wherein said particles further comprise a coating of non-swellable polymer.
- 10. The method according to claim 1 wherein said method further comprises the step of subjecting said chromatographic article to electron beam treatment.
- 11. The method according to claim 1 wherein said dry blend further comprises non-swellable property modifying particles in the range of more than zero and up to 28.99 parts per part of PTFE of non-swellable property modifying particles.
- 12. The method according to claim 11 wherein said non-swellable property modifying particles are selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, ammonium carbonate, kaolin, sugar, polyethylenes, polypropylenes, polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes, polycarbonates, zeolites, chitosan, glass beads, vermiculite, clay, ceramics, coloring or fluorescing particles, pH modifiers, and particles coated with these substances.
- 13. The method according to claim 1 wherein said dry blend further comprises water-swellable property modifying particles in an amount up to 30 weight percent of the total particles.
- 14. The method according to claim 13 wherein said water-swellable property modifying particles are selected from the group consisting of starch, modified starch, agarose, polyacrylamides, ion exchange and chelating particles, cellulosics, polymethacrylates, styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers, and chitosan.
- 15. The method according to claim 1 wherein said masking agent is an alcohol.
