Claims
- 1. A method of forming a downspout hole in a rain gutter bottom wall and forming means about the hole for connection of a downspout to the underside of the bottom wall in alignment with the hole, comprising:
- partially separating material of the gutter bottom wall in the intended area of the hole;
- shaping material integral with the bottom wall and integrally connected to the partially separated material into a circumferentially continuous downwardly extending lip flange and thereby defining the edge of the hole;
- and displacing the partially separated material into a plurality of downwardly projecting tabs extending from the lower edge of the lip flange.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, including slitting the material within the area of the hole along crossing lines with the slits extending to the lip flange material, and displacing the tabs coincident with shaping the lip flange.
- 3. A method according to claim 1, comprising applying a female die having a die aperture dimensioned for the desired size of hole to the underside of the gutter bottom wall, and driving a male die member including cutter means against the bottom wall in the area of the hole and advancing the male die member into the female die and thereby progressively cutting and forming the material from the area of the hole into said lip flange and said tabs.
- 4. A method according to claim 3, comprising driving one blade of said cutter means ahead of a second blade of the cutter means and with the first blade cutting a first slit across said material in the intended hole area of the bottom wall, and then driving said second blade across the first slit and with said second blade cutting a second slit in said material, whereby to effect said partially separating of the material into said tabs.
- 5. A method according to claim 1, comprising assembling the upper end of a downspout with said lip flange and said tabs, securing said tabs to the downspout, and holding the upper end of the downspout above the lower end of said lip flange and thereby providing a closure for the joint between the upper end of the downspout and the gutter bottom wall.
- 6. A method according to claim 1, comprising assembling a downspout with the lip flange and tabs, drilling aligned screw holes in the downspout and tabs, and driving screws into the aligned holes to effect attachment of the downspout to the tabs.
- 7. A method according to claim 1, comprising hanging the gutter on a building in the position it is to remain thereon, determining the exact position required for the downspout hole, and then while the gutter is in the hung position on the building forming said hole by said partially separating material and shaping said continuous lip flange and displacing said tabs as a continuous punching operation.
- 8. A method according to claim 7, comprising assembling the upper end of a downspout with said lip flange and said tabs, and securing said tabs to the downspout.
- 9. A method according to claim 7, comprising assembling the upper end of a downspout with said lip flange and downwardly projecting tabs, drilling aligned screw holes in the downspout and the tabs, and driving screws into the aligned holes and effecting attachment of the downspout to the tabs and with said lip flange providing a closure for the joint between the upper end of the downspout and the gutter bottom wall.
