- 2. The method of printing a continuous length of label web having printed thereon labels for containers of a given product which comprises visibly printing on one side of a continuous web a succession of label indicia peculiar to such given product, and as the label indicia for each of the labels is being printed, simultaneously printing on said web within the area of the web occupied by such label as a whole, and at a given localized area within such label area, a first control element that is invisible to the eye when viewed from said one side of the web on which the visible ink for the label indicia is printed and simultaneously printing on the web in registry with such first control element, a second control element that is visible to the eye when viewed from said one web side to provide a visible trace of the location of said first control element, and carrying out the printing of said second control elements so that the latter are located on portions of the web which are outside the areas of the web occupied by the labels and which are severable from such label occupying areas thereof, scanning said control elements to check the location of said first control elements prior to application of said labels to the product containers, and cutting away said outside web portions together with said second control elements prior to application of the labels to the product containers.
