Claims
- 1. A method of producing a YAlO.sub.3 :Ce phosphor, comprising the steps of:
- a. preparing a mixture of Y.sub.2 O.sub.3, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 and CeO.sub.2, the molar ratio of Y.sub.2 O.sub.3 to Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 being substantially 1:1, the amount of CeO.sub.2 being such that cerium in said phosphor amounts to 0.1 to 5 mole% of YAlO.sub.3 ;
- b. adding a barium compound selected from the group consisting of BaO, BaCO.sub.3, BaF.sub.2, BaCl.sub.2 and barium salts which yield BaO at a temperature below 1400.degree. C. to said mixture in an amount of 0.1 to 20 mole% of said mixture;
- c. baking the resultant mixture at a temperature in the range from about 1000.degree. to about 1400.degree. C.; and
- d. washing the product of step (c) with an acid when said amount of said barium compound is larger than 8 mole%.
- 2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said salts are Ba(OH).sub.2, Ba(NO.sub.3).sub.2 and BaC.sub.2 O.sub.4.
- 3. A method as claimed in claim 1, further comprising the step of baking said mixture prepared at step (a) at a temperature below about 1150.degree. C. and then pulverizing the baked mixture prior to step (b).
- 4. A method of producing a YAlO.sub.3 :Ce phosphor, comprising the steps of:
- a. preparing a mixture of Y.sub.2 O.sub.3, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, CeO.sub.2 and at least one of YF.sub.3 and AlF.sub.3, the molar ratio of (2YF.sub.3 + Y.sub.2 O.sub.3) to (2AlF.sub.3 + Al.sub.2 O.sub.3) being substantially 1:1, with the molar ratios 2YF.sub.3 /Y.sub.2 O.sub.3 and 2AlF.sub.3 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 being each in the range from 0.001 to 0.10 when YF.sub.3 or AlF.sub.3 is present, or with the sum of the molar ratios 2YF.sub.3 /Y.sub.2 O.sub.3 and 2AlF.sub.3 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 being in the range from 0.001 to 0.10 when both YF.sub.3 and AlF.sub.3 are present; the amount of CeO.sub.2 being such that cerium in said phosphor amounts to 0.1 to 5 mole% of YAlO.sub.3 ;
- b. adding a barium compound selected from the group consisting of BaO, BaCO.sub.3, BaF.sub.2, BaCl.sub.2 and barium salts which yield BaO at a temperature below 1400.degree. C. to said mixture in an amount of 0.1 to 20 mole% of said mixture;
- c. baking the resultant mixture at a temperature in the range from about 1000.degree. to about 1400.degree. C.; and
- d. washing the product of step (c) with an acid when said amount of said barium compound is larger than 8 mole%.
- 5. A method as claimed in claim 4, wherein said barium salts are Ba(OH).sub.2, Ba(NO.sub.3).sub.2 and BaC.sub.2 O.sub.4.
- 6. A method as claimed in claim 4, further comprising the step of baking said mixture prepared at step (a) at a temperature below about 1150.degree. C. and then pulverizing the baked mixture prior to step (b).
