Claims
- 1. A method of preparing a solution containing cuprous sulfate, cuprous bisulfate or mixtures thereof which comprises mixing a homogeneous solution containing at least 15% by volume water, at least 0.1% by weight cupric ion as cupric sulfate, at least 0.5% by volume sulfuric acid and at least 4% by volume of an organic nitrile selected from the group consisting of acetonitrile, acrylonitrile and 2-hydroxycyanoethane with particulate solids containing metallic copper and substances insoluble in the said homogeneous composition at a temperature within the range of 10.degree.C to 75.degree.C, allowing said copper and said solution to react and thus to form a solution containing cuprous sulfate, cuprous bisulfate or mixtures thereof and separating the solution from the unreacted substances.
- 2. The method as claimed in claim 1 in which the insoluble substances are selected from the group consisting of lead, gold, silver, bismuth and antimony.
- 3. A method of leaching copper as a solution containing cuprous sulfate, cuprous bisulfate or mixtures thereof from a substance selected from the group consisting of copper sulfides and materials containing copper and sulfide ions, comprising mixing said substance in particulate form at 10.degree.C to 75.degree.C with a homogeneous solution containing at least 0.5% by volume sulfuric acid, at least 15% by volume water, at least 0.5% by weight cupric ion as cupric sulfate and at least 20% by volume of an organic nitrile selected from the group consisting of acetonitrile, acrylonitrile and 2-hydroxycyanoethane until a solution containing cuprous sulfate, cuprous bisulfate or mixtures thereof is produced, and then separating said solution from any residual solids.
- 4. The method as claimed in claim 3 in which said substance is selected from the group consisting of covellite, chalcocite, digenite, djurleite, copper mattes, the product obtained by heating chalcopyrite with sulfur to above 400.degree.C and bornite.
- 5. A method of reducing an aqueous cupric sulfate solution containing at least 0.1% by weight cupric ion, at least 15% by volume water, at least 4% by volume of an organic nitrile selected from the group consisting of acetonitrile, acrylonitrile and 2-hydroxycyanoethane and at least 0.5% by volume sulfuric acid to a solution containing cuprous sulfate cuprous bisulfate or mixtures thereof comprising mixing said aqueous cupric sulfate solution with a metal selected from the group consisting of iron, nickel, cobalt, tin and cadmium at a temperature between 10.degree.C and 75.degree.C in a reaction vessel until a solution containing cuprous sulfate, cuprous bisulfate or mixtures thereof is produced and separating said solution thus produced from any residual solids.
