Claims
- 1. A method of preparing a prepolymer having multiple functionality comprising:
- dissolving a lignin derivative comprising an alkylene oxide modified lignin in a solvent;
- admixing a chain extending agent to the mixture under non-aqueous conditions in the presence of a catalyst, at a temperature and pressure sufficient to react the chain extending agent and the lignin, to produce a chain extended lignin derivative; and
- then removing the solvent and any remaining chain extending agent to isolate the chain extended lignin derivative.
- 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:
- admixing a capping agent to the lignin derivative - solvent mixture at a temperature and pressure sufficient to react the capping agent with the lignin.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the capping agent is selected from the group consisting of a dialkyl sulphate, a monoisocyanate and an alkylhalide.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the solvent is a polar aprotic solvent.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the polar aprotic solvent is selected from the group consisting of: 2-butanone, an alkyl acetate, a glycol ether ester and a polar hydrocarbon.
- 6. The method of claim 2 wherein the solvent is a polar aprotic solvent.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the polar aprotic solvent is selected from the group consisting of: 2-butanone, an alkyl acetate, a glycol ether ester and a polar hydrocarbon.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the chain extending agent is a preformed polymer segment.
- 9. The method of claim 2 wherein the chain extending agent is a preformed polymer segment.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein the chain extending is a monomer species and the reaction between the chain extending agent and the lignin derivative further comprises binding the monomer species to the lignin derivative and subsequently polymerizing the monomer species to a desired chain length.
- 11. The method of claim 2 wherein the chain extending is a monomer species and the reaction between the chain extending agent and the lignin derivative further comprises binding the monomer species to the lignin derivative and subsequently polymerizing the monomer species to a desired chain length.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein the chain extending agent is an alkylene oxide and the catalyst is an alkaline catalyst and the chain extension reaction is accomplished following said capping by said capping agent by reacting the alkylene oxide under non-aqueous conditions in the presence of the alkaline catalyst in combination with a transfer agent.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein the alkylene oxide is propylene oxide.
- 14. The method of claim 12 wherein the chain extending agent comprises propylene oxide.
- 15. The method of claim 12 wherein the alkylene oxide is selected from the group consisting of propylene oxide, butylene oxide, ethylene oxide, and mixtures thereof.
- 16. The method of claim 11 wherein the chain extending agent is selected from the group consisting of caprolactone, pivalolactone, and oxazolene.
- 17. The method of claim 2 wherein the chain extending agent is a partially capped lignin derivative.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein the capping agent is selected from the group consisting of a dialkyl sulphate, a monoisocyanate and an alkylene halide.
