Claims
- 1. A method of producing a welding wire constituted by a core of welding powder enclosed by a mantle of metal, comprising the steps of forming an elongated upwardly open channel composed of an outer metal channel of substantially U-shaped cross-section having lateral flanks of predetermined height and upper edges extending in longitudinal direction of the channel and an inner metal channel of substantially U-shaped cross-section abutting with the outer surface thereof against the inner surface of the outer channel and having lateral flanks of a height about half of said predetermined height and upper edges parallel to said upper edges of said outer channel; introducing into said inner channel a stream of welding powder to fill said inner channel with a loose strand of said powder; covering the loose strand of powder introduced into said inner channel by a metal band having downwardly curved borders engaging the flange of said inner channel to thereby enclose said powder by said inner channel and said metal band; and closing the outer channel by bringing the upper edges thereof in abutment with each other.
- 2. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein said outer and said inner channels are formed from flat metal bands by passing the same through cooperating rolls.
- 3. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein said outer channel is formed from a metal band of greater thickness than the metal band forming said inner channel.
- 4. A method as defined in claim 3, wherein said covering metal band is formed from a metal band of the same composition and of the same thickness as the metal band forming said inner channel.
- 5. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein said covering metal band is preformed and introduced into said upwardly open channel so that the flanks of said inner channel slightly overlap said downwardly curved borders of said covering metal band.
- 6. A method as defined in claim 1, and including the step of permanently connecting the abutting edges of said outer channel.
- 7. A method as defined in claim 6, wherein said step of permanently connecting said abutting edges of said outer channel comprises the step of welding said edges to each other.
- 8. A method as defined in claim 7, and including the step of reducing the cross-section of the wire by passing it through at least one drawing die.
- 9. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein closing of the outer channel is performed by drawing the outer channel with the other elements forming the wire located therein through a closing die to thereby produce a wire of substantially circulated cross-section.
- 10. A method as defined in claim 9, and including the step of forming said wire of circular cross-section into a wire of substantially rectangular cross-section by passing the same through the nip of at least one pair of rolls.
- 11. A method as defined in claim 10, wherein said wire of circular cross-section is formed into a wire of substantially rectangular cross-section by passing the wire through the nip of two pairs of rolls having axes normal to each other.
