Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a superconductor wire, comprising the steps of:
- forming a single solid copper-niobium composite core by assembling a multifilament billet from Nb rods within a copper matrix and welding, compacting and extruding said multifilament billet;
- providing a single tin tube;
- providing a stabilizer material tube;
- encasing said composite core in said single tin tube to form a tin encased composite core;
- surrounding said tin encased composite core with a thin diffusion barrier layer;
- concentrically surrounding said composite core having a thin diffusion barrier layer thereon with said stabilizer material tube to form an assembled product; and
- cold drawing said assembled product to a final superconductor wire size.
- 2. A process according to claim 1, wherein the diffusion barrier layer is selected from the group consisting of Nb, Ta, Ti, V and Zr.
- 3. A process according to claim 2, wherein the diffusion barrier layer is Nb.
- 4. A process according to claim 1, and further comprising the step of placing a layer of copper about the tin tube.
- 5. A process according to claim 1, wherein the Nb rods are Nb alloyed filaments.
- 6. A process according to claim 1, wherein the Cu matrix is of a Cu alloy material.
- 7. A process according to claim 1, wherein the tin tube is of a tin alloy material.
- 8. A process according to claim 1, wherein the material of said stabilizer material tube is selected from the group consisting of copper or aluminum.
- 9. A process according to claim 1, wherein the multifilament composite core is finned, having fins protruding into the tin tube.
- 10. A process according to claim 1, wherein the stabilizer material tube is finned, having fins protruding into the tin tube.
- 11. A process according to claim 1, wherein the tin tube is made of sectors provided with spacers.
- 12. A process according to claim 1, and further comprising the step of heating the wire whereby said tin tube melts to provide Nb.sub.3 Sn wires in a bronze matrix.
