Claims
- 1. A method of protecting a subject's teeth from erosion caused by the action of chemicals including harsh abrasives and acids, said method comprising administering to the subject's oral cavity an oral care composition comprising a polymeric mineral surface-active agent selected from condensed phosphorylated polymers, wherein said polymeric mineral surface-active agent is substantive to teeth and deposits a layer that protects teeth from erosive damage immediately after use of the oral composition and for a period of at least about one hour or longer thereafter and wherein said oral care composition is not intentionally swallowed for purposes of systemic administration but is rather retained in the oral cavity for a time sufficient to contact substantially all of the dental surfaces to deposit said protective layer.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein wherein the polymeric mineral surface active agent comprised in the oral care composition is a linear polyphosphate having about four or more phosphate groups.
- 3. A method according to claim 2, wherein the oral care composition has a pH greater than about 5.5 to about 10.0.
- 4. A method according to claim 1, wherein the oral care composition administered to the subject, further comprises an effective amount of a source of metal ions selected from the group consisting of stannous, zinc, copper, and mixtures thereof.
- 5. A method according to claim 4, wherein the oral care composition comprises from about 500 ppm to about 20,000 ppm metal ions selected from stannous, zinc, copper, and mixtures thereof in the total composition.
- 6. A method of protecting a subject's teeth from erosion comprising administering to the subject's oral cavity an oral care composition having a pH of from greater than about 4.0 to about 10.0 and comprising a source of metal ions selected from the group consisting of stannous, zinc, copper, and mixtures thereof, wherein said metal ions form insoluble compounds or complexes that deposit on the tooth surface, thereby forming a film or coating that protects teeth from erosive damage immediately after use of the oral composition and for at least about one hour thereafter, and wherein the composition is essentially free of ethylenediaminetetracetates and phytates.
- 7. A method according to claim 6, wherein the oral care composition comprises from about 500 ppm to about 20,000 ppm the metal ions.
