Claims
- 1. A method of providing high concentrations of a rare earth dopant in a deposited soot layer with a bore of a glass tube prior to collapsing the tube to form a glass fiber preform, comprising the steps of:
providing a vapor form of the rare earth dopant independent of other glass forming precursor constituents; mixing the formed vapor of the rare earth dopant with a vapor form of glass forming precursor constituents; forming the soot layer on the internal surface of the bore of the glass tube; imbibing the soot layer with liquid form of the rare earth dopant; sintering the imbibed soot layer to transform the soot layer into a monolithic glass layer; and collapsing the glass tube to form a preform.
- 2. The method of claim 1 comprising the further step of premixing the vapor form and the liquid form of the rare earth dopant with an index modifying component prior to performing the mixing and imbibing steps, respectively.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the rare earth dopants are a compound comprising one or more of Nd, Yb, Er, Tm, Ho or Sm.
- 4. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of dehydrating the soot layer prior to the step of sintering.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the step of dehydration is carried out employing the passage of a gas of Cl2, SOCl2, CCl2 or SF6 over the soot layer.
