Claims
- 1. A method of purifying titanium tetrachloride, comprising: heating in a vessel a loose mass of catalytic metal to a temperature over 300.degree. C. introducing vapor of a crude titanium tetrachloride to contact with said metal, said chloride comprising a minor amount of titanium oxychloride of formula TiOCl.sub.2, causing a reaction to deoxidize and convert a substantial part of the oxychloride to substances which are less volatile than titanium tetrachloride, removing such substances in condensed state from the titanium tetrachloride in fluid state, and recovering thus purified titanium tetrachloride.
- 2. The method as recited in claim 1 in which said chloride further comprises an oxychloride of formula VOCl.sub.3.
- 3. The method as recited in claim 1, in which said catalytic metal consists essentially of copper.
- 4. The method as recited in claim 3, in which said temperature is between 400.degree. and 650.degree. C.
- 5. The method as recited in claim 1, in which said catalytic metal substantially consists of iron, with the temperature being over 550.degree. C.
- 6. The method as recited in claim 5, in which said temperature is between 600.degree. and 800.degree. C.
