Claims
- 1. A process for re-activating a coke containing zeolite L reforming catalyst containing at least one Group VIII noble metal and having exchangeable cations of which at least 75% are selected from the group consisting of lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium and barium which process comprises:
- (a) removing a substantial portion of the coke by contacting the catalyst with 0.2 to 15% by volume oxygen at a temperature from about 380.degree. to 450.degree. C.;
- (b) dispersing the at least one noble metal on the surface of the zeolite by contacting the catalyst with a gaseous stream comprising 0.2 to 15% by volume oxygen, and 0.05 to 1.0% by volume HCl or Cl.sub.2 at a temperature from about 400.degree. to 530.degree. C.;
- (c) removing excess chlorine and stabilizing the catalyst by contacting the catalyst with a gaseous stream comprising 0.2 to 15.0% by volume oxygen at a temperature from about 400.degree. to 540.degree. C.;
- (d) and thereafter reducing the at least one noble metal in the presence of hydrogen; and in which steps (a) through (d) are conducted in the presence of about 0.5 to 5.0% by volume water so that the particles of the at least one noble metal are well dispersed over the surface of the zeolite and at least about 90% of the at least one noble metal is dispersed in the form of particles having a diameter of less than about 7 .ANG. as measured with bright field imaging on a transmission electron microscope with 4 .ANG. point-to-point resolution.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the product of step (d) is characterized in that the particles of the at least one noble metal are well dispersed over the surface of the catalyst and at about 98% of the at least one noble metal is dispersed in the form of particles having a diameter of less than about 7 .ANG. as measured with bright field imaging on a transmission electron microscope with 4 .ANG. point-to-point resolution.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the process is carried out at a pressure between 0.1 and 2 MPa.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the temperature in step (c) is maintained between 480.degree. and 520.degree. C.
