Claims
- 1. A method of removing, containing and collecting orcanic contaminants from a fluid column, comprising the steps of:
- providing a plurality of volumes of polymer-based filtration media, each volume comprising an amount of a polymer material disposed within a filtering container, said polymer having a property of acting to absorb and solidify organic compounds coming into contact with the polymer-based filtration media, the polymer-based filtration media establishing distinct chambers of distinct organic compound absorption units;
- providing an amount of coalescing material within the filtering container and distributing it therein as a plurality of layers;
- placing a volume of the polymer-based filtration media in a stratified arrangement within the filtering container wherein said polymer-based filtration media is disposed between alternate layers of coalescing material;
- passing a feed stream of organic contaminants carried within a fluid column through the filtering container; and
- discharging as a processed feed stream the fluid exiting from the second container for release into the environment.
- 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the steps of:
- removing the polymer-based filtration media containing solidified organic compounds from the filtering container;
- replacing the polymer-based filtration media containing solidified organic compounds with fresh polymer-based filtration media arranged between alternate layers of coalescing material, said polymer-based filtration media having a capacity to absorb and solidify organic compounds; and
- disposing of the solidified polymer-based filtration media.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 wherein the polymer material of the polymer-based filtration media is an elastomer polymer.
- 4. A method according to claim 1 wherein said polymer-based filtration media is stacked in a stratified arrangement within a filter container to create flow channels therethrough.
- 5. An apparatus for removing, containing, and collecting organic contaminants from a fluid column, comprising:
- a filtering container having an inlet port for receiving a feed stream of organic contaminants carried within a fluid column and an outlet port for discharging, as a processed feed stream, fluid from the filtering container for release into the environment;
- a plurality of layers of coalescing material within the filtering container distributed therein as a plurality of layers;
- a plurality of volumes of polymer-based filtration media arranged in stratification within the filtering container to establish chambers of distinct organic compound absorption units, each volume of polymer-based filtration media having a property of absorbing and solidifying organic compounds coming into contact therewith; and
- a volume of polymer-based filtration media being disposed between alternate layers of coalescing material.
- 6. The device of claim 5 wherein the polymer-based filtration media is comprised of a blend of the polymer material with absorbent material.
- 7. The device of claim 5 wherein the polymer-based filtration media is comprised of a blend of the polymer material with coalescing material.
- 8. The device of claim 5 wherein the polymer-based filtration media is comprised of alternate layers of coalescing material and polymer suspended within the fibers of a textile material.
- 9. An apparatus for removing, containing, and collecting organic contaminants from a fluid column, comprising:
- a first filtering container having an inlet port for receiving a feed stream of organic contaminants carried within a fluid column and an outlet port for discharging fluid from the first filtering container;
- a plurality of layers of coalescing material within the first filtering container;
- a plurality of volumes of polymer-based filtration media arranged in stratification within the first filtering container to establish chambers of distinct organic compound absorption units, each volume of polymer-based filtration media having a property of acting to absorb and solidify organic compounds coming into contact therewith;
- a volume of polymer-based filtration media being disposed between alternate layers of coalescing material within the first filtering container;
- a second filtering container having an inlet port for receiving the fluid discharged from the first filtering container and an outlet port for discharging, as a processed feed stream, fluid from the second filtering container for release into the environment;
- a plurality of layers of coalescing material within the second filtering container; and
- an amount of an activated carbon material within the second filtering container distributed therein in layers wherein a layer of activated carbon material is disposed between alternate layers of coalescing material.
- 10. The device of claim 9 wherein the polymer-based filtration media is comprised of a blend of the polymer material with absorbent material.
- 11. The device of claim 9 wherein the polymer-based filtration media is comprised of a blend of the polymer material with coalescing material.
- 12. The device of claim 9 wherein the polymer-based filtration media is comprised of alternate layers of coalescing material and polymer suspended within the fibers of a textile material.
- 13. A method of removing, containing and collecting contaminants from a fluid column, comprising the steps of:
- providing a vessel to collect a feed stream having contaminants carried within a fluid column;
- pretreating the collected feed stream to facilitate separation of contaminants in the fluid column;
- providing a first separation device, said separation device having a capacity to extract readily recoverable organic contaminants from the fluid column;
- providing a second separation device, said separation device having a capacity to extract suspended solids from the fluid column;
- providing a filtering container having a plurality of volumes of polymer-based filtration media and an amount of coalescing material disposed within the filtering container, said polymer-based filtration media and coalescing material being distributed within the filtering container therein as a plurality of layers in a stratified arrangement wherein said polymer-based filtration media is disposed between alternate layers of coalescing material, each volume of polymer-based media comprising an amount of a polymer material having a property of acting to absorb and solidify organic compounds coming into contact therewith, the polymer-based filtration media establishing distinct chamnbers of distinct organic compound absorption units;
- passing a feed stream having contaminants carried within a fluid column through the first separation device;
- passing the feed stream exiting from the first separation device through the second separation device;
- passing the feed stream exiting from the second separation device through the filtering container; and
- discharging as a processed feed stream the fluid exiting from the filtering container for release into the environment.
- 14. The method of claim 13 further comprising the steps of:
- removing readily recoverable organic contaminants from the first separation device;
- removing suspended solids from the second separation device; removing the polymer-based filtration media containing solidified organic compounds from the filtering container;
- replacing the polymer-based filtration media containing solidified organic compounds with fresh polymer-based filtration media arranged between alternate layers of coalescing material, said polymer-based filtration media having a capacity to absorb and solidify organic compounds;
- disposing of the readily recoverable organic contaminants;
- disposing of the suspended solids; and
- disposing of the solidified polymer-based filtration media.
- 15. A method according to claim 13 wherein the polymer material of the polymer-based filtration media is an elastomer polymer.
- 16. A method according to claim 13 wherein said polymer-based filtration media is stacked in a stratified arrangement within a filtering container to create flow channels therethrough.
- 17. A method according to claim 13 wherein chemical pretreatment of the collected feed stream facilitates separation of contaminants in the fluid column.
- 18. A method according to claim 13 wherein electrical pretreatment of the collected feed stream facilitates separation of contaminants in the fluid column.
- 19. An apparatus for removing, containing, and collecting contaminants from a fluid column, comprising:
- a first separation device having an inlet port for receiving a feed stream of contaminants carried within a fluid column, an outlet port for discharging readily recoverable organic contaminants and an outlet port for discharging a feed stream free of readily recoverable contaminants;
- a second separation device having an inlet port for receiving a feed stream of suspended solids carried within a fluid column, said separation device having the capacity to collect and contain suspended solids from the feed stream and discharge through an outlet port a processed feed stream free of suspended solids; and
- a filtering container having an inlet port for receiving a feed stream of organic contaminants carried within a fluid column and an outlet port for discharging, as a processed feed stream, fluid from the container for release into the environment, said filtering container having a volume of polymer-based filtration media being disposed between alternate layers of coalescing material.
- 20. The device of claim 19 wherein the polymer material of the polymer-based filtration media is an elastomer polymer.
- 21. The device of claim 19 wherein the polymer-based filtration media is comprised of a blend of the polymer material with absorbent material.
- 22. The device of claim 19 wherein the polymer-based filtration media is comprised of a blend of the polymer material with coalescing material.
- 23. The device of claim 19 wherein the polymer-based filtration media is comprised of a textile material having the polymer material suspended within the fibers of the textile material.
- 24. The device of claim 19 wherein the polymer-based filtration media is comprised of alternate layers of coalescing material and polymer suspended within the fibers of a textile material.
- 25. The device of claim 19 wherein a volume of the polymer-based filtration media is distributed within the filter container between a plurality of layers of coalescing material.
- 26. The device of claim 19 wherein the polymer-based filtration media is distributed in stratification within the filter container to establish chambers of distinct organic compound absorption units.
