Claims
- 1. A method to prevent organic contaminants from reaching ground water supplies by disposing a quaternary phosphonium ion-exchanged clay within or on the soil, or within a bentonite clay water barrier, to prevent the penetration of petroleum-based contaminants through the clay, the ion-exchanged clay including a quaternary phosphonium ion-exchanged cation of the formula: ##STR6## wherein X.sup.- is selected from the group consisting of Cl.sup.-, Br.sup.-, and I.sup.- ; wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are organic moieties selected from the group consisting of short chain alkyl moieties (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4); long chain alkyl moieties (C.sub.4 -C.sub.20); substituted alkyl moieties having 1 to about 20 carbon atoms; substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl moieties; substituted or unsubstituted aryl moieties; substituted or unsubstituted alkaryl moieties; alkenes; alkynes; aldehydes; ketones; alcohols; carboxylic acids; esters; ethers; cyclic ethers; and combinations thereof.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 is an aryl moiety having three to about seven carbon atoms.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein at least one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 is selected from the group consisting of benzyl and phenyl.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the organic contaminant is selected from a group consisting of a petroleum component; a petroleum derivative; and combinations thereof.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the organic contaminant is selected from the group consisting of benzene; toluene, o-xylene; m-xylene; p-xylene; ethylbenzene; butylbenzene; naphthalene; dichloromethane; trichloromethane; tetrachloromethane; monochloroethane; dichloroethane; trichloroethane; monochloroethene; dichloroethene; trichloroethene; tetrachloroethene; phenol; chlorophenols; polychlorinated biphenyls; dioxin; and mixtures thereof.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the clay is a smectite clay.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl moiety selected from the group consisting of phenyl; napthenyl; trienyl; pyridyl; pyrrolyl; furyl; pyraxolyl; pyridazinyl; pyrimidyl; quinolyl; isoquinolyl; and acridinyl.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 is a substituted alkaryl moieties, wherein the alkaryl moiety is substituted with a functionality selected from the group consisting of a hydroxy; alkoxy (--OR); alkyl (--R); halo (--X); amino (--NH.sub.2, --NHR, --NR.sub.2); nitro (--NO.sub.2); cyano (--CN); alkyl sulfonyl (--SO.sub.2 R); mercapto (--SH); alkylthio (--SR); carbonyl (--CO--Y); and mixtures thereof; wherein R is an alkyl group having one to about twenty carbon atoms; X is a hylogen atom selected from the group consisting of chloro; bromo; and fluoro; and Y is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen; hydroxy; alkoxy; haloamino; and alkyl having one to about twenty carbon atoms.
