Claims
- 1. A method for removing a thrombosis in a fistula, said method comprising the steps of:
radiating a thrombosis, disposed in a fistula, with ultrasound in order to effect removal of the thrombosis by dissolution thereof, said ultrasound being introduced at a frequency of less than about 100 kHz; and introducing a selected dose of an echo contrast agent proximate the thrombosis in said fistula in order to enhance the effectiveness of the ultrasound in removing the thrombosis by dissolution thereof.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the echo contrast agent is comprised of a microbubble medium.
- 3. The method according to claim 2 wherein the echo contrast agent is a perfluorocarbon.
- 4. The method according to claim 2 wherein the microbubble medium is comprised of a medium selected from the group consisting of free gas bubbles, stabilized gas bubbles, colloidal suspensions, emulsions and aqueous solutions.
- 5. The method according to claim 2 wherein the microbubble medium is a colloidal suspension comprising dodecafluropentane.
- 6. The method according to claim 2 wherein the microbubble medium is an aqueous solution comprised of sonicated albumin.
- 7. The method according to claim 1 wherein the ultrasound is introduced at a frequency of between about 24 kHz and about 53 kHz.
- 8. The method according to claim 1 wherein the step of radiating comprises radiating an autogenous fistula with ultrasound.
- 9. The method according to claim 1 wherein the step of radiating comprises radiating a prosthetic graft fistula with ultrasound.
- 10. A method for enhancing thrombolytic action of a thrombolytic agent, said method comprising the steps of:
radiating a thrombosis, disposed in a fistula, with ultrasound in order to effect removal of the thrombosis, said ultrasound having a frequency of less than about 100 kHz; and introducing a selected dose of a thrombolytic agent proximate the thrombosis in said fistula.
- 11. The method according to claim 10 further comprising the step of introducing a selected dose of an echo contrast agent proximate the thrombosis in said fistula in order to enhance the effectiveness of both the ultrasound and the thrombolytic agent in removing the thrombosis.
- 12. The method according to claim 11 wherein the echo contrast agent is comprised of a microbubble medium.
- 13. The method according to claim 12 wherein the echo contrast agent is comprised of a perfluorocarbon.
- 14. The method according to claim 12 wherein the microbubble medium is comprised of a medium selected from the group consisting of free gas bubbles, stabilized gas bubbles, colloidal suspensions, emulsions and aqueous solutions.
- 15. The method according to claim 12 wherein the microbubble medium is a colloidal suspension comprising dodecafluropentane.
- 16. The method according to claim 12 wherein the microbubble medium is an aqueous solution comprising sonicated albumin.
- 17. The method according to claim 10 wherein streptokinase is introduced as the thrombolytic agent.
- 18. The method according to claim 10 wherein urokinase is introduced as the thrombolytic agent.
- 19. Apparatus for removal of a thrombosis in a fistula, said apparatus comprising:
ultrasonic means for radiating a thrombosis in a fistula with ultrasound, having a frequency of less than about 100 kHz; and means for introducing a selected dose of an echo contrast agent proximate the thrombosis in order to enhance the effect of the ultrasound in removing the thrombosis from the fistula.
- 20. Apparatus for removal of a thrombosis in a fistula, said apparatus comprising:
ultrasonic means for radiating a thrombosis in a fistula with ultrasound, having a frequency of less than about 100 kHz; and means for introducing a thrombolytic agent proximate the thrombosis in the fistula.
- 21. The apparatus according to claim 17 wherein the echo contrast agent is a microbubble medium selected from the group consisting of free gas bubbles, stabilized gas bubbles, colloidal suspensions, emulsions and aqueous solutions.
- 22. The apparatus according to claim 17 wherein the echo contrast agent comprises a perfluorocarbon.
