Claims
- 1. A method of retrofitting an existing oil-fired boiler to burn coal and natural gas to achieve the normal power densities and/or SO.sub.2 levels of said boiler when burning oil and maintaining manageable ash levels therefrom comprising the steps of:
- (A) determining the type of coal based upon the percent of sulfur and the percent of ash which is to be used in a pulverized state to form a generally homogenous fuel mixture;
- (B) selecting from among:
- (1) direct coal-water slurry injection and combustion apparatus for low sulfur and low ash contents, and high fusion temperature coals,
- (2) first indirect coal-water slurry injection and combustion apparatus for moderate sulfur and high ash contents, and high fusion temperature coals, and
- (3) second indirect coal-water slurry injection and combustion apparatus for moderate sulfur and high ash contents, and low fusion temperature coals;
- (C) installing the selected injection and combustion apparatus on said existing oil-fired boiler;
- (D) installing natural combustible gas injection in said combustion apparatus;
- (E) injecting said coal-water slurry under pressure in a tangentially swirling path; and
- (F) injecting said gas under pressure with air in a apirally swirling path within the path of said coal-water slurry with the motion of said gas reinforcing the motion of said coalwater slurry to enhance the more complete combustion thereof.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 further comprising the step of (G) introducing a gas-air ring about the path of said coal-water slurry.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 further comprising the step of (G) feeding chemical additives into the combustion apparatus to scrub the flame produced therein thereby to reduce the SO.sub.2 emissions.
- 4. A method according to claim 3 further comprising the step of (H) installing, prior to steps (A-D), a device communicating with the combustion chamber for feeding chemical additives thereinto according to step (G).
- 5. A method according to claim 3 further comprising the step of (H) installing, prior to steps (A-D), a device within the combustion chamber to feed chemical additives into the flame according to step (G).
- 6. A method according to claim 5 further comprising the step of (I) introducing a gas-air ring about the path of said coal-water slurry.
- 7. A method according to claim 1 further comprising the step of (G) installing natural combustible gas injection, prior to step (E), in the combustion chamber of said existing oil-fired boiler.
- 8. A method of retrofitting an existing oil-fired boiler to burn coal and natural gas to achieve the normal power densities and/or SO.sub.2 levels of said boiler when burning oil and maintaining manageable ash levels therefrom comprising the steps of:
- (A) determining the type of coal based upon the percent of sulfur and the percent of ash which is to be used in a pulverized state to form a generally homogenous fuel mixture;
- (B) selecting from among:
- (1) direct coal-air injection and combustion apparatus for low sulfur and low ash contents, and high fusion temperature coals,
- (2) first indirect coal-air injection and combustion apparatus for moderate sulfur and high ash contents, and high fusion temperature coals, and
- (3) second indirect coal-air injection and combustion apparatus for moderate sulfur and high ash contents, and low fusion temperature coals;
- (C) installing the selected injection and combustion apparatus on said existing oil-fired boiler;
- (D) installing natural combustible gas injection in said combustion apparatus;
- (E) injecting said coal under pressure with air in a tangentially swirling path; and
- (F) injecting said gas under pressure with air in a spirally swirling path within the path of said coal with the motion of said gas reinforcing the motion of said coal to enhance the more complete combustion thereof.
- 9. A method according to claim 7 further comprising the step of (G) introducing a gas-air ring about the path of said coal-air.
- 10. A method according to claim 8 further comprising the step of (G) feeding chemical additives into the combustion apparatus to scrub the flame produced therein thereby to reduce the SO.sub.2 emissions.
- 11. A method according to claim 10 further comprising the step of (H) installing, prior to steps (A-D), a device communicating with the combustion chamber for feeding chemical additives thereinto according to step (G).
- 12. A method according to claim 10 further comprising the step of (H) installing, prior to steps (A-D), a device within the combustion chamber to feed chemical additives into the flame according to step (G).
- 13. A method according to claim 12 further comprising the step of (I) introducing a gas-air ring about the path of said coal-air.
- 14. A method according to claim 8 further comprising the step of (G) installing natural combustible gas injection, prior to step (E), in the combustion chamber of said existing oil-fired boiler.
- 15. A method of retrofitting an existing oil-fired boiler to burn coal and natural gas to achieve the normal power densities and/or SO.sub.2 levels of said boiler when burning oil and maintaining manageable ash levels therefrom comprising the steps of:
- (A) determining the type of coal based upon the percent of sulfur and the percent of ash which is to be used in a pulverized state to form a generally homogenous fuel mixture;
- (B) selecting from among:
- (1) first indirect coal injection and a precombustion apparatus for moderate sulfur and high ash contents, and high fusion temperature coals, and
- (2) second indirect coal injection and a precombustion apparatus for moderate sulfur and high ash contents, and low fusion temperature coals;
- (C) installing the selected coal injection and precombustion apparatus on said existing oil-fired boiler;
- (D) installing natural combustible gas injection in said pre-combustion apparatus;
- (E) installing ash removal apparatus associated with said pre-combustion apparatus to remove ash therefrom;
- (F) injecting said coal under pressure in a tangentially swirling path;
- (G) injecting said gas under pressure with air in a spirally swirling path within the path of said coal with the motion of said gas reinforcing the motion of said coal to enhance the more complete combustion thereof; and
- (H) injecting the fuel rich combustion products into the combustion chamber of said existing oil-fired boiler with the ash removed from said coal in said pre-combustion apparatus.
- 16. A method according to claim 15 further comprising the step of (I) installing a chemical additive feeding device within the pre-combustion apparatus to scrub the flame produced therein thereby to reduce the SO.sub.2 emissions.
- 17. A method according to claim 15 further comprising the step (I) feeding chemical additives into the pre-combustion apparatus, prior to step (H), to scrub the flame produced therein thereby to reduce the SO.sub.2 emissions.
- 18. A method according to claim 17 further comprising the step of (J) installing, prior to steps (A-E), a device communicating with the pre-combustion chamber for feeding chemical additives thereinto according to step (I).
- 19. A method according to claim 15 further comprising the step (I) installing natural combustible gas injection in the combustion chamber and said existing oil-fired boiler.
