Claims
- 1. A method of selecting pigment ink set and a receiver combination for inkjet color printing comprising:f) providing at least two color inks, each ink comprising a carrier and a pigment; g) printing the above inks onto a set of receivers using test images consisting of single color patches of a Dmax density (100% dot coverage); h) measuring the gloss level of each patch and the receiver at a predefined specular angle; i) calculating the Relative Gloss Difference (RGD%) values of the ink set and receiver combination; and j) selecting the ink set and receiver combination such that RGD value is less than 40% when 60° is used as the specular angle, and the RGD value is calculated according to Equations (A): RGD %=∑I=1N &LeftBracketingBar;Gloss (Imaged Areas)I-Gloss (Non-Imaged Areas)&RightBracketingBar;∑I=1N Gloss (Imaged Areas)IEquation (A) where I is a variable which identifies a certain color patch used in the evaluation, N is the total number of color patches used in the evaluation.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the RGD value is less than 30% when the specular angle is 60°.
- 3. A method of selecting pigment ink set and a receiver combination for inkjet color printing comprising:a) providing at least two color inks, each ink comprising a carrier and a pigment; b) printing the above inks onto a set of receivers using test images consisting of single color patches of a Dmax density (100% dot coverage); c) measuring the gloss level of each patch and the receiver at a predefined specular angle; d) calculating the Relative Gloss Difference (RGD%) and Relative Gloss Variability (RGV%) values of the ink set and receiver combination; and e) selecting the inks for the color set and receiver combination such that RGD value is less than 40% and RGV value among inks is less than 10% when 60° is used as the specular angle, and the RGD and RGV values are calculated according to Equations (A) and (B), respectively: RGD %=∑I=1N &LeftBracketingBar;Gloss (Imaged Areas)I-Gloss (Non-Imaged Areas)&RightBracketingBar;∑I=1N Gloss (Imaged Areas)IEquation (A)RGV (%)=∑I=1N &LeftBracketingBar;(Gloss (Imaged Areas)I-AG)&RightBracketingBar;AGNEquation (B) where AG=∑I=1N Gloss (Imaged Area)INI is a variable which identifies a certain color patch used in the evaluation, N is the total number of color patches used in the evaluation.
- 4. A method of selecting a pigment ink set and a receiver combination for ink jet color printing comprising:a) providing at least two color inks, each ink comprising a carrier and a pigment; b) adjusting the sizes of the pigment particle of the inks to achieve the desired gloss; c) printing the above inks onto a set of receivers using test images consisting of single color patches of a Dmax density (100% dot coverage); d) measuring the gloss level of each patch and the receiver at a predefined specular angle; e) calculating the Relative Gloss Difference (RGD) and Relative Gloss Variability (RGV) values of the ink set and receiver combination; and f) selecting the inks for the color set and receiver combination such that RGD value is less than 40% and RGV value among inks is less than 10% when 60° is used as the specular angle, and the RGD and RGV values are calculated according to Equations (A) and (B), respectively: RGD %=∑I=1N &LeftBracketingBar;Gloss (Imaged Areas)I-Gloss (Non-Imaged Areas)&RightBracketingBar;∑I=1N Gloss (Imaged Areas)IEquation (A)RGV (%)=∑I=1N &LeftBracketingBar;(Gloss (Imaged Areas)I-AG)&RightBracketingBar;AGNEquation (B) where AG=∑I=1N Gloss (Imaged Area)INI is a variable which identifies a certain color patch used in the evaluation, N is the total number of color patches used in the evaluation.
- 5. A method of selecting a pigment ink set and a receiver combination for ink jet color printing comprising:a) providing at least two color inks, each ink comprising a carrier and a pigment; b) adding into inks non-film forming particles with particle sizes selected to achieve the desired gloss; c) printing the above inks onto a set of receivers using test images consisting of single color patches of a Dmax density (100% dot coverage); d) measuring the gloss level of each patch and the receiver at a predefined specular angle; e) calculating the Relative Gloss Difference (RGD) and Relative Gloss Variability (RGV) values of the ink set and receiver combination; and f) selecting the inks for the color set and receiver combination such that RGD value is less than 40% and RGV value among inks is less than 10% when 60° is used as the specular angle, and the RGD and RGV values are calculated according to Equations (A) and (B), respectively: RGD %=∑I=1N &LeftBracketingBar;Gloss (Imaged Areas)I-Gloss (Non-Imaged Areas)&RightBracketingBar;∑I=1N Gloss (Imaged Areas)IEquation (A)RGV (%)=∑I=1N &LeftBracketingBar;(Gloss (Imaged Areas)I-AG)&RightBracketingBar;AGNEquation (B) where AG=∑I=1N Gloss (Imaged Area)INI is a variable which identifies a certain color patch used in the evaluation, N is the total number of color patches used in the evaluation.
- 6. The method of claim 1, 3, 4, or 5 wherein the RGD value is less than 30% and RGV value among inks is less than 7% when the specular angle is 60°.
- 7. The method of claim 1, 3, 4 or 5 wherein receiver is a porous ink jet recording element having a 60° specular gloss of at least about 5.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein said porous ink jet recording element further comprises a support having thereon a porous ink-receiving layer.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein said support is polyethylene-coated paper.
- 10. The method of claim 7 wherein said porous ink-receiving layer comprises from about 20% to about 95% by weight of inorganic particles and from about 5% to about 80% by weight of a polymeric binder, based on the combined weight of the inorganic particles and the binder.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein said inorganic particles comprise silica, alumina, titanium dioxide, clay, calcium carbonate, barium sulfate or zinc oxide.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein said polymeric binder is gelatin, poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(vinyl pyrrolidinone) or poly(vinyl acetate) or copolymers thereof.
- 13. The method of claim 7 wherein said porous ink-receiving layer contains organic particles.
- 14. The method of claim 7 wherein said porous ink-receiving layer comprises a polymeric open-pore membrane.
- 15. The method of claim 1, 3, 4 or 5 wherein said pigment is a yellow pigment, a cyan pigment, a magenta pigment, a black pigment, a white pigment, a violet pigment, a green pigment, or an orange pigment.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein said pigment is C.I. Pigment Yellow 155, C.I. Pigment Yellow 74, C.I. Pigment Blue 15:3, bis(phthalocyanylalumino)tetraphenyldisiloxane, C.I. Pigment Red 122 or C.I. Pigment Black 7.
- 17. The method of claim 1, 3, 4 or 5 wherein the inks in the ink set comprise non-film forming particles.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein the non-film forming particles are between 0.03 and 0.5 micron.
- 19. The method of claim 17 where the non-film forming particles are inorganic particles.
- 20. The method of claim 19 wherein the inorganic particles are silica, alumina, titinium dioxide, zircona, clay, calcium carbonate, barium sulfate or zinc oxide.
- 21. The method of claim 17 wherein the non-film forming particles are organic polymeric particles.
- 22. The method of claim 21 wherein the organic polymeric particle is a polyurethane, a polyacrylic, or a polyester with a Tg of greater than 60° C.
- 23. The method of claim 1, 3, 4 or 5 wherein the inks in the ink set further comprise a film forming polymer resin.
- 24. The method of claim 23 wherein the film forming polymer resin is water dispersible.
- 25. The method of claim 23 wherein the film forming polymer resin is a polyester, a polyurethane or a polyacrylic.
- 26. The method of claim 25 wherein the polyester is a sulfonated polyester ionomer.
- 27. An ink jet printing method, comprising the steps of:a) providing an ink jet printer that is responsive to digital data signals; b) loading the printer with a porous ink jet recording element having a 60° specular gloss of at least about 5; c) loading the printer with a pigment based ink jet ink set comprising at least two inks; wherein the RGD value is less than 40% when 60° is used as the specular angle and the RGD value is calculated according to Equation (A): RGD %=∑I=1N &LeftBracketingBar;Gloss (Imaged Areas)I-Gloss (Non-Imaged Areas)&RightBracketingBar;∑I=1N Gloss (Imaged Areas)IEquation (A) where I is a variable which identifies a certain color patch used in evaluation, N is the total number of color patches used in the evaluation; and d) printing on the ink-recording element using the ink jet ink in response to the digital data signals.
- 28. An ink jet printing method, comprising the steps of:a) providing an ink jet printer that is responsive to digital data signals; b) loading the printer with a porous ink jet recording element having a 60° specular gloss of at least about 5; c) loading the printer with pigment based ink jet ink set comprising at least two inks; wherein the RGD value is less than 40% and RGV value among inks is less than 10% when 60° is used as the specular angle; and the RGD and RGV values are calculated according to Equations (A) and (B), respectively: RGD %=∑I=1N &LeftBracketingBar;Gloss (Imaged Areas)I-Gloss (Non-Imaged Areas)&RightBracketingBar;∑I=1N Gloss (Imaged Areas)IEquation (A)RGV (%)=∑I=1N &LeftBracketingBar;(Gloss (Imaged Areas)I-AG)&RightBracketingBar;AGNEquation (B) where AG=∑I=1N Gloss (Imaged Area)IN where I is a variable which identifies a certain color patch used in evaluation, N is the total number of color patches used in the evaluation; and d) printing on the ink-recording element using the ink jet ink in response to the digital data signals.
