Claims
- 1. A method for stabilizing a polymer which is normally subject to degradation by ultraviolet radiation which comprises incorporating into said polymer an ultraviolet stabilizingly effective amount of a polymer prepared by polymerizing, optionally with a comonomer, a compound of the formula (I) ##STR14## wherein R represents C.sub.3 -C.sub..vertline. alkenyloxy, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenylamino, or di(C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenyl)amino; R.sup.1 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkoxy, halo, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkylthio, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenyloxy, amino, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenylamino, di(C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenyl)amino, the groups ##STR15## C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkylamino, di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.18)alkylamino, morpholino, pyrrolidyl, piperidino, a substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkylamino, or a substituted di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.18)alkylamino, wherein the substituents are selected from amino, cyano, carboxy, alkoxycarbonyl wherein the alkoxy moiety has 1 to 8 carbon atoms, and the group ##STR16## wherein R.sup.2 represents hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, or benzyl; R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 independently represent C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, benzyl or phenethyl, or together with the carbon to which they are attached form a C.sub.5 -C.sub.10 cycloalkyl; and R.sup.5 represents hydrogen, C.sub.2 -C.sub.3 hydroxylalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, hydroxyl, or oxyl; R.sup.6 represents hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, or the group ##STR17## Y and Y', which may be the same, or different, represent oxy, or ##STR18## X represents C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkylene, wherein the alkylene chain may be interrupted by an oxo, thio or ##STR19## radical, C.sub.5 -C.sub.10 cycloalkylene, ##STR20## C.sub.6 -C.sub.12 arylene, or C.sub.8 -C.sub.14 aralkylene; with the proviso that at least one substituent in said compound is, or contains, ##STR21##
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the stabilizing polymer is incorporated in a concentration of from about 0.2% to 2% based on the weight of the polymer to be stabilized.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the polymer to be stabilized is a polyolefin.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the polyolefin is polypropylene.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the stabilizing polymer is a polymer of a monomer of the formula (II) ##STR22##
- 6. The composition produced by the method of claim 1.
