Claims
- 1. A method of inverting filter cigarettes or analogous rod-shaped articles each of which has a filter at one end thereof, comprising the steps of transporting two parallel rows of articles sideways so that the filters of articles in one of said rows are adjacent to the filters of articles in the other of said rows; turning the articles of said one row through at least substantially 180 degrees about axes which are at least substantially normal to the longitudinal directions of such articles and remote from the respective filters so that the filters of the thus inverted articles face away from the articles of said other row, said turning step including conveying the articles of said one row along an endless path, turning successive articles through a first angle during transport along a first portion of said path, providing a first mobile support for successive articles of said one row during turning through said first angle, turning successive articles through a second angle during transport along a second portion of said path, and providing a second mobile support for successive articles during turning through said second angle, the sum of said first and second angles being or approximating 180 degrees; and shuffling said rows to form a single third row of articles wherein the orientation of all filters is the same.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said shuffling step comprises moving the articles of at least one of said two rows lengthwise toward the other of said two rows.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein said first angle equals said second angle and said path is an at least substantially circular path.
- 4. The method of claim 3, wherein each of said portions of said path extends along an arc of at least substantially 180 degrees.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein said turning step further comprises attracting the articles of their supports by suction during turning through said first and second angles.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein said transporting step includes advancing the articles of said two rows along a first path and said turning step includes conveying the articles of said one row along a second path, and further comprising the step of returning the inverted articles of said one row from said second into said first path prior to said shuffling step.
- 7. The method of inverting articles of predetermined length as defined in claim 6, wherein said returning step includes establishing between the inverted articles of said one row and the articles of said other row a distance which at least approximates said predetermined length.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein said shuffling step includes temporarily transporting the inverted articles of said one row and the non-inverted articles of said other row along separate paths.
- 9. The method of inverting articles of predetermined length as defined in claim 1, wherein said turning step further includes establishing between the inverted articles of said one row and the non-inverted articles of said other row a distance which at least approximates said predetermined length, said shuffling step comprising shifting the inverted articles of said one row lengthwise through a distance d.sub.1 in a direction toward the other row and shifting the articles of said other row lengthwise through a distance d.sub.2 in a direction toward said one row, d.sub.1 plus d.sub.2 being equal to said predetermined length so that the articles of the thus obtained single row are aligned with and disposed one behind the other.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein d.sub.1 equals d.sub.2.
- 11. The method of claim 9, wherein said shuffling step includes alternately shifting the articles of said one and said other row so that said third row contains alternating articles of said one and said other row.
