Claims
- 1. A method of treating onychomycosis comprising administering to the nail area of a patient in need thereof a composition comprising a safe and effective amount of urea and the balance being dermatologically acceptable excipients.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the urea is administered topically.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises from about 10 to about 60 wt-% urea.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises from about 30 to 50 wt-% urea.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises about 40 wt-% urea.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is selected from the group consisting of topical creams, ointments, solutions, lacquers, gels, foams and any other vehicle that can be applied directly to the nail area.
- 7. A method of treating onychomycosis comprising topically administering to the nail area of a patient in need thereof a composition comprising:
(a) about 10 to about 40 wt-% urea; (b) about 5.5 to about 20 wt-% petrolatum or a synthetic or semi-synthetic hydrocarbon, or a semi-solid mixture thereof; (c) about 10 to about 20 wt-% of a liquid petrolatum or a synthetic or semi-synthetic oleaginous liquid fraction, or a mixture thereof; (d) about 0.25 to about 2 wt-% of a C16-18 aliphatic straight or branched chain fatty alcohol or fatty acid, or a mixture thereof; (e) about 1 to about 5 wt-% propylene glycol; (f) about 1 to about 3 wt-% glyceryl stearate; (g) about 0.01 to about 0.5 wt-% xanthan gum; and (h) the balance being water.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the composition further comprises about 0.05 to about 30 wt-% of a mixture of a carbomer and triethanolamine.
- 9. A method of treating fungal conditions of the skin comprising administering to an affected area of the skin of a patient in need thereof a composition comprising a safe and effective amount of urea and the balance being dermatologically acceptable excipients.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the urea is administered topically.
- 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the composition comprises from about 10 to about 60 wt-% urea.
- 12. The method of claim 9, wherein the composition comprises from about 30 to 50 wt-% urea.
- 13. The method of claim 9, wherein the composition comprises about 40 wt-% urea.
- 14. The method of claim 9, wherein the composition is selected from the group consisting of topical creams, ointments, solutions, lacquers, gels, foams and any other vehicle that can be applied directly to the affected area of the skin.
- 15. The method of claim 9, wherein an additional topical antifungal agent is administered concomitantly.
- 16. A method of treating fungal conditions of the skin comprising topically administering to an affected area of the skin of a patient in need thereof a composition comprising:
(a) about 10 to about 40 wt-% urea; (b) about 5.5 to about 20 wt-% petrolatum or a synthetic or semi-synthetic hydrocarbon, or a semi-solid mixture thereof; (c) about 10 to about 20 wt-% of a liquid petrolatum or a synthetic or semi-synthetic oleaginous liquid fraction, or a mixture thereof; (d) about 0.25 to about 2 wt-% of a C16-18 aliphatic straight or branched chain fatty alcohol or fatty acid, or a mixture thereof; (e) about 1 to about 5 wt-% propylene glycol; (f) about 1 to about 3 wt-% glyceryl stearate; (g) about 0.01 to about 0.5 wt-% xanthan gum; (h) about 0.05 to about 30 wt-% of a mixture of a carbomer and triethanolamine; and (i) the balance being water.
- 17. The method of claim 16, wherein the composition further comprises about 0.05 to about 30 wt-% of a mixture of a carbomer and triethanolamine.
- 18. A method of treating fungal conditions of the skin comprising administering to an affected area of the skin of a patient in need thereof a topical composition comprising a safe and effective amount of urea either before, after or concomitantly with a safe and effective amount of a topical antifungal agent.
