Claims
- 1. A method of treatment or inhibition of tumors, comprising administering a compound to a subject requiring such treatment or inhibition, said compound being (M(dppe).sub.2).sup.+, in which M is selected from the group consisting of Au(I), Ag(I) and Cu(I), and in which one or more of the eight phenyl substituents is exchanged with a 2 pyridyl, 3 pyridyl or 4 pyridyl group, said compound having anti-tumor activity, an octanol/water partition coefficient between 0.01 and 25.5, and having selective toxicity to cancer cells.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the compound has an octanol/water partition coefficient between 0.01 and 14.
- 3. A method of treatment or inhibition of tumors, comprising administering a compound of Formula I to a subject in need thereof: ##STR8## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, and R.sub.8 are the same or different and are selected from phenyl, or substituted phenyl;
- A is selected from --(CH.sub.2)--.sub.n where n is 2 or 3 or cis --CH.dbd.CH-- or ##STR9## where R.sub.9 represents carboxylate; M is Au(I), Ag(I) or Cu(I);
- X is a monovalent nontoxic anion; and
- wherein one or more of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, and R.sub.8 is exchanged with a 2-pyridyl, 3-pyridyl or 4-pyridyl group, which may optionally be substituted, said compound having anti-tumor activity, an octanol/water partition coefficient between 0.01 and 25.5, and having selective toxicity to cancer cells.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the compound has an octanol/water partition coefficient between 0.01 and 0.12 and demonstrates selective toxicity against cisplatin-resistant cell lines.
- 5. The method of claim 3, wherein the monovalent non-toxic anion is selected from the group consisting of nitrate and halide.
