Claims
- 1. A method of removing a clot or foreign body from a vessel of a patient, comprising the steps of:
- (a) inserting a catheter with at least one lumen past the clot or foreign body;
- (b) inserting a solid, non-hollow, shape memory coil having varying diameters and connected at one of its ends to an insertion mandril into the lumen of the catheter, whereby the coil deforms to an essentially straight configuration;
- (c) advancing the coil to the distal end of the catheter by translating the insertion member distally;
- (d) advancing the coil distally out of the catheter to allow the shape memory coil to reform its natural coil configuration;
- (e) translating the coil across the clot or foreign body by translating the insertion mandril proximally relative to the catheter to thereby ensnare the clot or foreign body; and
- (f) moving the clot or foreign body out of the vessel by moving the catheter, coil and insertion mandril out of the vessel.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the coil is elastic.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the coil is superelastic.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the coil comprises a solid nitinol wire.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein a clot is removed and wherein the viscoelastic properties of the clot are utilized to ensnare the clot and corkscrew the clot with the coil.
- 6. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of:
- removing the clot or foreign body entirely from the patient's body.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the clot removed was a clot within the cerebral vasculature.
- 8. The method of claim 6 wherein the clot removed was a clot within the coronary vasculature.
- 9. The method of claim 6 wherein the clot removed was a clot within the peripheral vasculature.
- 10. The method of claim 6 wherein the clot removed was a clot within a surgically created arteriovenous fistula.
- 11. The method of claim 6 wherein the clot removed was a clot within a the venous system.
- 12. The method of claim 6 wherein the clot removed was a clot within a by-pass graft.
