Claims
- 1. A process of using a fish plasma component in a nutrient medium for tissue culture, comprising:
obtaining blood from a fish; separating plasma from the blood; extracting one or more specific components of the plasma; and culturing tissue using the one or more extracted plasma components, and none of any remainder of the plasma, in a nutrient medium;
wherein the tissue cultured using the extracted one or more plasma components is other than fish tissue.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the fish from which the blood is obtained is one of a number of fish that are reared under consistent and reproducible conditions.
- 3. The process of claim 2, wherein the fish from which the blood is obtained is at least one of a progeny of domesticated broodstock, sexually immature, in the log-phase of growth, larger than two kilograms, and reared by standard husbandry methods.
- 4. The process of claim 1, wherein obtaining blood from a fish includes:
rendering the fish to a level of loss of reflex activity; and drawing blood from a caudal blood vessel.
- 5. The process of claim 4, wherein obtaining blood from a fish includes, prior to rendering the fish to a level of loss of reflex activity, reducing the levels of proteolytic enzymes and non-protein nitrogen present in the blood of the fish.
- 6. The process of claim 1, wherein separating plasma from the blood includes centrifuging the blood.
- 7. The process of claim 1, wherein extracting the one or more components from the plasma includes performing an extraction process on the plasma such that:
all process temperatures are no greater than 4° C.; no cytotoxic chemical residues remain in the one or more plasma components; and no oxidation of plasma lipids occurs.
- 8. The process of claim 7, wherein the one or more components extracted from the plasma are lipids.
- 9. The process of claim 8, wherein an antioxidant is added to the plasma prior to extracting the one or more components from the plasma.
- 10. The process of claim 7, wherein the one or more components extracted from the plasma is a plasma protein.
- 11. The process of claim 1, wherein tissue cultured using the one or more extracted plasma components is mammalian cells.
- 12. The process of claim 11, wherein the mammalian cells are neurons.
- 13. The process of claim 1, wherein tissue cultured using the one or more extracted plasma components is organ tissue.
- 14. The process of claim 1, wherein tissue cultured using the one or more extracted plasma components is insect cells.
- 15. The process of claim 1, wherein the fish is a cold water fish.
- 16. The process of claim 15, wherein the fish is a salmonid.
- 17. The process of claim 1, wherein culturing tissue in the one or more extracted plasma components includes seeding the tissue in a defined medium and the one or more extracted plasma components.
- 18. The process of claim 1, wherein
the one or more specific components of the plasma are fibrinogen and thrombin, and culturing tissue using the extracted plasma components, and none of any remainder of the plasma, in a nutrient medium, includes preparing a gel with the fibrinogen, the thrombin, and calcium in tissue culture media.
- 19. The process of claim 19, wherein culturing tissue further includes embedding cells in the gel.
- 20. The process of claim 19, wherein embedding cells in the gel includes embedding neurons in the gel.
