Claims
- 1. A method for producing a composite article of manufacture comprising a phosphor particle and a continuous coating on the surface of the particle, the method comprising:
- (a) evacuating a chamber containing: phosphor particles; means to rotate the phosphor particles; a color modifying material; and heating means to vaporize the color modifying material;
- (b) rotating the phosphor particles while;
- (c) heating the color modifying material to vaporize it,
- whereby the color modifying material is vapor deposited on the rotating phosphor particles to form a continuous coating.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the phosphor particles are rotated by mechanically vibrating the particles.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the phosphor particles are a red-emitting cathode ray phosphor selected from the group consisting of europium-activated yttrium oxide, europium-activated yttrium oxysulfide, and europium-activated yttrium orthovanadate.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the color modifying material is a red pigment.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the color modifying material is cadmium sulfoselenide.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the chamber is evacuated to a vacuum of at least 2.times.10.sup.-5 torr.
- 7. The method of claim 5 wherein the heating is carried out within the range of about 1400.degree. C. to 1550.degree. C. for from 10 seconds to two minutes, resulting in a coating thickness of from 10 to 2000 angstroms.
