Claims
- 1. A device, comprising:
an application for communicating with a directory server, wherein the application submits a query to the directory server requesting data for the application, in response to a query result that includes the requested data from the directory server, the application stores the received data for display on the device.
- 2. The device of claim 1, wherein the query is prepared according to a lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP).
- 3. The device of claim 1, wherein the query result is prepared according to a lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP).
- 4. The device of claim 1, wherein the application parses the query result to extract the requested data for the application.
- 5. The device of claim 1, wherein the application displays a row of the stored data on a display of the device.
- 6. The device of claim 5, wherein the application displays a next row of the stored data on the display of the device.
- 7. The device of claim 1, wherein the application terminates a communication with the directory server and releases the data for the application.
- 8. The device of claim 1, further comprising memory for storing preferences associated with the application.
- 9. The device of claim 1, wherein the application is a sports-related application, the received data includes sports-related information, and the application displays the sports-related information on a display of the device.
- 10. The device of claim 1, wherein the application is a weather-related application, the received data includes weather-related information, and the application displays the weather-related information on a display of the device.
- 11. The device of claim 1, wherein the application is a stock quote-related application, the received data includes a stock quote, and the application displays the stock quote on a display of the device.
- 12. The device of claim 1, wherein the application is a news-related application, the received data includes news-related information, and the application displays the news-related information on a display of the device.
- 13. The device of claim 1, wherein the application is an e-mail-related application, the received data includes e-mail-related information, and the application displays the e-mail-related information on a display of the device.
- 14. The device of claim 1, wherein the application is an instant messaging application, the received data includes an instant message, and the application displays the instant message on a display of the device.
- 15. The device of claim 1, wherein the application is a bulletin board application, the received data includes a bulletin board message, and the application displays the bulletin board message on a display of the device.
- 16. The device of claim 1, wherein the application is a contact management application, the received data includes contact management-related information, and the application displays the contact management-related information on a display of the device.
- 17. The device of claim 1, wherein the application is a meeting scheduling application, the received data includes meeting scheduling-related information, and the application displays the meeting scheduling-related information on a display of the device.
- 18. The device of claim 1, wherein the directory server comprises a lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) directory server.
- 19. The device of claim 1, wherein the device comprises a hand-held device.
- 20. The device of claim 19, wherein the hand-held device includes one of a personal digital assistant (PDA), an Internet appliance, a cellular phone and a palmtop computer.
- 21. A computer-readable medium, comprising:
an application for running on a device and for communicating with a directory server, wherein the application submits a query to the directory server requesting data for the application, in response to a query result that includes the requested data from the directory server, the application stores the received data for display on the device.
- 22. The computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the query is prepared according to a lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP).
- 23. The computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the query result is prepared according to a lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP).
- 24. The computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the application parses the query result to extract the requested data for the application.
- 25. The computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the application terminates a communication with the directory server and releases the data for the application.
- 26. The computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the application stores preferences associated with the application in memory of the device.
- 27. The computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the directory server comprises a lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) directory server.
- 28. The computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the device comprises one of a personal digital assistant (PDA), an Internet appliance, a cellular phone and a palmtop computer.
- 29. A device, comprising:
a client process for communicating with a directory server; and an application, wherein the client process submits a query to the directory server requesting data for the application, and in response to a query result that includes the requested data from the directory server, the client process stores the received data for display on the device by the application.
- 30. The device of claim 29, wherein the query is prepared according to a lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP).
- 31. The device of claim 29, wherein the query result is prepared according to a lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP).
- 32. The device of claim 29, wherein the client process parses the query result to extract the requested data for the application.
- 33. The device of claim 29, wherein the application displays a row of the stored data on a display of the device.
- 34. The device of claim 33, wherein the application displays a next row of the stored data on the display of the device.
- 35. The device of claim 29, wherein the application instructs the client process to terminate a communication with the directory server and release the data for the application.
- 36. The device of claim 29, further comprising a memory for storing preferences associated with the application.
- 37. The device of claim 29, wherein the directory server comprises a lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) directory server.
- 38. The device of claim 29, wherein the device comprises one of a personal digital assistant (PDA), an Internet appliance, a cellular phone and a palmtop computer.
