Claims
- 1. A method to diagnose the presence or absence of tumor tissue at a location in a subject which method comprises
- administering to said subject an effective amount of a composition consisting essentially of 10 kd aggregates of porphyrins which are fluorescent, photosensitizing and capable of localizing and being retained in tumor cells for a longer time than in normal tissues, and wherein the process for preparation of said composition comprises raising the pH of a hematoporphyrin derivative preparation in aqueous medium to 6.5-12 to obtain aggregates of 10 kd or greater and separating said aggregates from the remainder of the hematoporphyrin derivative preparation
- in an amount effective to localize in a tumor at said suspected location;
- waiting for sufficient time to permit the drug to clear normal tissue;
- irradiating the suspected location with a wavelength absorbed by, and which elicits fluorescence from, said composition; and
- measuring the fluorescence emitted.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said waiting time is about 3 hours-2 days.
