Claims
- 1. A process for the production of a trimethylsulfonium halide comprising reacting dimethyl sulfide and a methyl halide in the presence of a solvent mixture of at least 5% water and no more than 95% of a water-immiscible organic solvent.
- 2. The process of claim 1 in which the reaction is carried out under pressure.
- 3. The process of claim 1 in which the reaction is carried out at a pressure of up to 80 psig.
- 4. The process of claim 3 in which the methyl halide is methyl chloride.
- 5. The process of claim 3 in which the methyl halide is methyl bromide.
- 6. The process of claim 1 in which the methyl halide is methyl chloride.
- 7. The process of claim 1 in which the methyl halide is methyl bromide.
- 8. The process of claim 1 in which a water-miscible solvent is included in the reaction mixture.
- 9. The process of claim 1 in which the water-immiscible solvent is included in the solvent mixture in an amount of at least 60%.
- 10. The process of claim 9 in which up to 40 wt. % of total solvent is water.
- 11. The process of claim 1 in which the water-immiscible solvent is toluene.
- 12. The process of claim 1 in which up to 60 wt. % of total solvent is water.
