Claims
- 1. An adjustable chair comprising:a seat; a pedestal base; an electric motor; a resistance-sensing switch configured to control power to said electric motor; a height adjustment mechanism extending between said pedestal base and said seat for electrically adjusting a height of said seat relative to said pedestal base, said height adjustment mechanism comprising a limit switch configured to limit an amount of movement of said height adjustment mechanism; a control mechanism comprising a plurality of motor-gear groups comprising at least a first motor-gear group selectively operable to electrically adjust a position of said seat relative to said pedestal base; a power kit assembly electrically coupled to said electric motor and said control mechanism for supplying power to said electric motor and said control mechanism; and a mounting assembly pivotally coupled to said control mechanism between said control mechanism and said height adjustment mechanism, said mounting assembly selectively engageable to mechanically change a position of said seat relative to said pedestal base.
- 2. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 wherein said height adjustment mechanism comprises an upper enclosure member and a lower enclosure member rotatably coupled to said upper enclosure member, said electric motor coupled to height adjustment mechanism for telescopically moving at least one of said upper enclosure member and said lower enclosure member relative to said remaining enclosure member.
- 3. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a resistance-sensing switch coupled to said electric motor and configured to control power to said electric motor.
- 4. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 wherein said power kit assembly comprises a battery pack comprising at least one rechargeable battery cell and a housing, said battery cell extending from a first end of said battery pack to a second end of said housing.
- 5. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 wherein said mounting assembly comprises a swivel bracket selectively engageable to mechanically change an angular orientation of said control mechanism with respect to said mounting assembly.
- 6. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 wherein said mounting assembly configured to change an angular orientation of said seat with respect to said base independently of electrical adjustments from said control mechanism.
- 7. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 wherein said mounting assembly mechanically changes a position of said seat in proportion to an amount of weight applied to said seat by an occupant of said seat.
- 8. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 wherein said mounting assembly further comprises a tension control device coupled to said mounting assembly swivel bracket.
- 9. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 8 wherein said mounting assembly tension control device configured to control an amount of mechanical movement of said seat relative to said pedestal base.
- 10. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 further comprising at least one control switch electrically coupled to each said control mechanism motor-gear group and to said height adjustment mechanism.
- 11. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 further comprising at least one stop configured to limit an amount of mechanical movement of said seat relative to said pedestal base.
- 12. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 wherein an operation of each said control mechanism motor-gear group is reversible, an operation of said height adjustment mechanism is reversible.
- 13. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 wherein said control mechanism first motor-gear group configured to adjust an angular orientation of said seat relative to said pedestal base.
- 14. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a chair back coupled to said control mechanism, said control mechanism motor-gear groups further comprise a second motor-gear group configured to adjust an angular orientation of said chair back relative to said chair seat.
- 15. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a chair back coupled to said control mechanism, said control mechanism motor-gear groups further comprise a second motor-gear group configured to adjust a lateral position of said seat relative to said chair back.
- 16. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a chair back coupled to said control mechanism, said seat comprising a front edge and a rear edge, said control mechanism motor-gear groups further comprise a second motor-gear group configured to adjust a distance between said chair seat rear edge and said chair back.
- 17. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 wherein said power kit assembly comprises a battery pack comprising at least one rechargeable battery cell coupled to a battery life indicator configured to detect an amount of useful life of said batter pack battery cell.
- 18. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 wherein said power kit assembly removably coupled to said electric motor and said control mechanism.
- 19. An adjustable chair in accordance with claim 1 wherein said power kit assembly comprises at least one of a lead acid battery, a nickel metal hydride battery, a nickel cadmium battery, a lithium ion battery, and a lithium ion polymer battery.
- 20. A chair assembly comprising:a seat; a back; a base; a motor; a resistance-sensing switch coupled to said motor and configured to control power to said motor; a height adjustment mechanism coupled to said motor and extending between said base and said seat for electrically adjusting a height of said seat with respect to said base, said height adjustment mechanism comprising a limit switch configured to limit an amount of movement of said seat with respect to said base; a control mechanism pivotally coupled between said seat and said height adjustment mechanism, said back coupled to said control mechanism, said control mechanism configured to mechanically and electrically adjust a position of said seat with respect to said base such that mechanical adjustments to said seat are independent of electrical adjustments to said seat; and a power kit assembly electrically coupled to said chair for supplying power to said motor and said control mechanism.
- 21. A chair assembly in accordance with claim 20 wherein said control mechanism further configured to adjust a position of said seat in proportion to an amount of weight applied to said seat by an occupant of said seat.
- 22. A chair assembly in accordance with claim 20 wherein said control mechanism further configured to mechanically adjust an angular orientation of said seat with respect to said base.
- 23. A chair assembly in accordance with claim 20 wherein said control mechanism further configured to electrically adjust an angular orientation of said seat with respect to said base.
- 24. A chair assembly in accordance with claim 20 wherein said control mechanism further configured to electrically adjust an angular orientation of said back with respect to said seat.
- 25. A chair assembly in accordance with claim 20 further comprising a mounting assembly pivotally coupling said control mechanism to said height adjustment mechanism.
- 26. A chair assembly in accordance with claim 25 further comprising a tension control device coupled to said mounting assembly and configured to control an amount of mechanical movement of said seat relative to said base.
- 27. A chair assembly in accordance with claim 20 further comprising at least one control switch electrically coupled to said control mechanism for limiting an amount of electrical movement of said height adjustment mechanism.
- 28. A chair assembly in accordance with claim 20 wherein said seat comprises a front edge and a rear edge, said control mechanism further configured to electrically adjust a distance between said chair rear edge and said chair back.
- 29. A chair assembly in accordance with claim 20 wherein said power kit assembly is electrically coupled to said motor, said control mechanism, and said height adjustment mechanism.
- 30. A chair assembly in accordance with claim 29 wherein said power kit assembly removably mounted to at least one of said motor, said control mechanism, and said height adjustment mechanism.
- 31. A chair assembly in accordance with claim 29 wherein said power kit assembly comprises at least one rechargeable battery cell.
- 32. A method for assembling an adjustable chair including a seat, a back, a base, a motor, a height adjustment mechanism, a power kit assembly, and a control mechanism, said method comprising:coupling the control mechanism including at least a first motor-gear group to the chair seat to selectively electrically adjust a position of the seat relative to the pedestal base; coupling the chair back to the control mechanism; coupling a limit switch to the control mechanism to limit an amount of adjustment movement of the chair seat relative to the pedestal base; coupling a resistance-sensing switch to the control mechanism to control power to the motor; coupling the height adjustment mechanism to the control mechanism such that the height adjustment mechanism extends between the base and the chair seat for electrically adjusting a height of the seat with respect to the base; and electrically coupling the power kit assembly to the chair for supplying power to the motor, the height adjustment mechanism, and the control mechanism.
- 33. A method in accordance with claim 32 wherein said step of coupling a control mechanism further comprises the step of coupling the control mechanism to the chair seat to electrically control an angular orientation of the chair seat relative to the pedestal base.
- 34. A method in accordance with claim 32 wherein said step of coupling a control mechanism further comprises the step of coupling the control mechanism to the chair seat to electrically adjust a height of the chair seat relative to the pedestal base.
- 35. A method in accordance with claim 32 wherein said step of coupling a control mechanism further comprises the step of coupling the control mechanism to the chair seat to electrically adjust a lateral position of the chair seat relative to the pedestal base.
- 36. A method in accordance with claim 35 wherein the chair seat includes a forward edge and a rear edge, the rear edge between the forward edge and the chair back, said step of coupling a control mechanism to the chair seat further comprising the step coupling the control mechanism to the chair seat to electrically adjust a distance between the chair rear edge and the chair back.
- 37. A method in accordance with claim 32 wherein said step of electrically coupling the power kit assembly to the chair further comprises the step of coupling a power kit assembly including a rechargeable battery pack to the chair for supplying power to the control mechanism, the motor, and the height adjustment mechanism.
- 38. A method in accordance with claim 32 wherein said step of coupling the control mechanism further comprises the step of coupling the control mechanism to the chair seat to mechanically adjust a position of the chair in proportion to an amount of weight applied to the chair seat by an occupant of the chair seat.
- 39. A method in accordance with claim 32 wherein said step of coupling the control mechanism further comprises the step of coupling the control mechanism to the chair seat to mechanically adjust an angular orientation of the chair seat with respect to the base.
- 40. A method in accordance with claim 32 further comprising the step of pivotally coupling a mounting assembly to the control mechanism such that the mounting assembly couples the control mechanism to the height adjustment mechanism.
- 41. A method in accordance with claim 32 further comprising the step of coupling a tension control device to the control mechanism to limit an amount of mechanical movement of the chair seat relative to the base.
- 42. A method in accordance with claim 30 wherein said step of coupling a limit switch to the control mechanism further comprises the step of electrically coupling a limit switch to the control mechanism for limiting an amount of electrical movement of said height adjustment mechanism.
- 43. A method in accordance with claim 30 wherein said step of electrically coupling the power kit assembly to the chair further comprises the step of removably mounting the power kit assembly to at least one of the height adjustment mechanism, the control mechanism, and the motor.
- 44. A method in accordance with claim 32 further comprising the step of coupling at least one stop to the chair seat to limit an amount of mechanical movement of the chair seat.
