Claims
- 1. A method of operating a group communications device, the method comprising:
operating said group communications device to operate in an idle mode of operation during a first period of time, the step of operating in an idle mode of operation including:
transmitting a device resource request in response to a received user resource request; and operating said group communications device in a suppress mode of operation during a second period of time, the step of operating said group communications device in said suppress mode of operation including:
suppressing a received user resource request.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein suppressing a received user resource request includes:
responding to said user resource request without transmitting a device resource request in response to the received user resource request.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein suppressing a received user request further includes:
storing said user resource request for at least a preselected period of time while said device remains in said suppress mode of operation.
- 4. The method of claim 3, wherein operating in a suppress mode of operation further includes:
monitoring for group resource control signals; in response to receiving a group resource control signal indicating release of a group communications resource, transitioning from said suppress mode of operation to said idle mode of operation; and while in said idle mode of operation transmitting a device resource request corresponding to said stored user resource request.
- 5. The method of claim 2, wherein responding to said user communications resource request while in said suppressed mode of operation includes:
generating a signal indicating to a user that user communications resource requests are being suppressed.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein operating in a suppress mode of operation further includes:
receiving a group resource control signal; and in response to receiving a group resource control signal indicating release of a group communications resource, transitioning from said suppress mode of operation to said idle mode of operation.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein operating in an idle mode of operation further includes:
receiving a group resource control signal; and in response to receiving a group resource control signal indicating a communications resource grant to another device in a communications group to which said group communications device belongs, transitioning from the idle mode of operation to said suppress mode of operation.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein said group resource control signal is included in a multicast IP packet.
- 9. The method of claim 7, wherein operating in an idle mode of operation further includes:
in response to receiving a group resource control signal indicating a communications resource grant to said group communications device, transitioning from the idle mode of operation to a send mode of operation.
- 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:
operating said group communications device in said send mode of operation during a third period of time, the step of operating in a send mode of operation including:
transmitting data received from a user of the group communications device to other communications devices in the same group as said group communications device.
- 11. The method of claim 10, wherein said data is speech; and
wherein transmitting data received from a user includes:
digitizing received speech signals;
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein transmitting data received from a user further includes:
packetizing the digitized speech signals into IP packets; and transmitting said IP packets over a wireless communications channel.
- 13. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of operating in a send mode of operation further includes:
monitoring to detect a user resource release signal; and in response to detecting a user resource release signal, transitioning from said send mode of operation to said idle mode of operation.
- 14. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of operating in a send mode of operation further includes:
responding to a resource grant signal indicating a grant of said group communications resource to another group communications device, belonging to the same group as said group communications device, by transitioning from said send mode of operation to said suppress mode of operation.
- 15. The method of claim 1, wherein said group communications device is a wireless communications device coupled to a controller and a plurality of additional wireless communications devices by a wireless communications channel, said additional wireless communications devices being members of the same group as said group communications device, the method further comprising:
operating each member of said group to monitor for signals from said controller and the other wireless communications devices in the group during each of said idle and suppress modes of operation.
- 16. The method of claim 1, wherein operating in an idle mode of operation further includes:
receiving a group resource control signal including a communications resource grant to another device in a communications group to which said group communications device belongs and including a priority level indicator; and if said included priority level indicator indicates a priority level higher than a priority level associated with said communications device, transitioning from the idle mode of operation to said suppress mode of operation in response to said received group resource control signal.
- 17. The method of claim 16, further comprising:
if said included priority level indicator indicates a priority level lower than a priority level associated with said communications device, remaining in the idle mode of operation.
- 18. The method of claim 1, wherein operating in an idle mode of operation further includes:
receiving a group resource control signal indicating a communications resource grant to another device in a communications group to which said group communications device belongs, said another device having a higher communications priority than said group communications device; and transitioning from the idle mode of operation to said suppress mode of operation in response to said received group resource control signal including a communication resource grant to said another device.
- 19. The method of claim 18, wherein said received group resource control signal further indicates the priority of said another device.
- 20. The method of claim 18, wherein operating in an idle mode of operation further includes:
receiving a group resource control signal indicating a communications resource grant to another device in a communications group to which said group communications device belongs, said another device having a lower communications priority than said group communications device; and remaining in said idle mode of operation in response to said received group resource control signal including a communication resource grant to said another device.
- 21. A communications device suitable for use in performing a group communications operation, said communications device including:
a receiver for receiving communication signals; a transmitter for transmitting communications signals; an input device for receiving user resource requests; and a control means for controlling the operation of said communications device in a plurality of modes of operation including a first mode of operation wherein the control means causes a device resource request to be transmitted in response to a received user resource request and a second mode of operation wherein the control means suppresses received user resource requests.
- 22. The communications device of claim 21, further comprising:
means for storing a user resource request received during said second mode of operation.
- 23. The communications device of claim 22, wherein said control means includes:
means for generating a device resource request corresponding to a stored resource request following transition of said communications device from said second mode of operation to said first mode of operation.
- 24. The communications device of claim 21, wherein said control means further includes:
means for causing said mode of operation to transition from said first mode of operation to a third mode of operation in response to a resource grant signal indicating the grant of a communications resource to said communications device, said third mode of operation being a send mode of operation.
- 25. The communications device of claim 24, wherein said control means further includes:
means for causing said mode of operation to transition from said third mode of operation to said second mode of operation when a resource grant to another device is received.
- 26. The communications device of claim 21, wherein said control means further includes:
means for causing said mode of operation to transition from said first mode to said second mode when a signal indicating a resource grant to another communications device is detected.
- 27. The communications device of claim 21, wherein said control means further includes:
means for causing said mode of operation to transition from said first mode to said second mode when a resource grant signal indicating a grant to another device and a grant priority higher than a priority assigned to said communications device is received.
- 28. The communications device of claim 27, wherein said control means further includes:
means for disregarding a received grant signal indicating a resource grant to another device when said resource grant signal includes a grant priority lower than a priority assigned to said communications device.
- 29. A group communications method comprising:
operating a group communications control unit to receive a communications resource request from a first mobile communications device belong to a group including said first mobile communications device and a plurality of additional communications devices; operating said group communications control unit to broadcast a first IP message including a multicast address corresponding to said group and a resource grant to said first communications device.
- 30. The group communications method of claim 29, further comprising:
operating at least some of said plurality of additional communications devices to receive said first IP message; and operating said at least some of said plurality of additional communications devices to suppress the generation of group resource requests in response to receiving said first IP message.
- 31. The group communications method of claim 30, further comprising:
operating said group communications control unit to broadcast a second IP message including a multicast address corresponding to said group, said second IP message also including a resource release message.
- 32. The group communications method of claim 31, further comprising;
operating at least one of said at least some of said plurality of additional communications devices to stop suppressing the generation of resource requests in response to said second IP message.
- 33. The group communications method of claim 30, further comprising:
operating said group communications control unit to broadcast a second IP message including a multicast address corresponding to said group, said second IP message also including a resource release message indicating the release of the resource granted to said first communications device.
- 34. The group communications method of claim 30, wherein said group communications control unit includes a grant priority level indicator in said first IP message.
- 35. A control unit for controlling resource grants in a group communications environment, the controller comprising:
means for receiving a communications resource request from a first mobile communications device belong to a group including said first mobile communications device and a plurality of additional communications devices; means for generating a first IP message including a multicast address corresponding to said group and a resource grant to said first communications device; and means for broadcasting a first IP message.
- 36. The control unit of claim 35, further comprising:
means for processing a resource release signal received from said first mobile communications device; means for generating a second IP message including a multicast address corresponding to said group and a resource message indicating release of the resource granted to said first communications device; and means for broadcasting the second IP message.
- 37. The control unit of claims 36, wherein said means for broadcasting a first IP message includes an antenna.
