Claims
- 1. An intravascular tissue expanding catheter, comprising: a tubular catheter shaft defining a central axis;a housing coupled about a distal end of the catheter shaft so as to be distributed substantially uniformly about the central axis, wherein the housing is formed of a unitary piece of material having a distal end and a proximal end, wherein at least one slit in the housing forms at least one deflecting member having an actuatable distal most tip that is moveable in a substantially lateral direction away from the central axis of the catheter shaft when actuated, and a base defined by a proximal termination of the at least one slit, wherein, in an unactuated configuration, the distal most tip is disposed substantially close to the central axis; and an actuation assembly positioned along the catheter shaft, the actuation assembly including an expandable element positioned within the housing and at least one inflation conduit coupled to the expandable element, wherein the expandable element expands against the at least one deflecting member so as to cause the at least one deflecting member to disrupt an intravascular occlusion.
- 2. The intravascular tissue expanding catheter of claim 1, wherein the expandable element comprises an expandable balloon configured for a plurality of inflation cycles, wherein the expandable balloon has an inflated profile substantially in the range of 0.05 inches to 0.20 inches.
- 3. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the at least one deflecting member comprises at least two deflecting members arranged about the central axis.
- 4. A catheter for treating a vascular occlusion, comprising;an elongated shaft including a central axis, a proximal section and a distal section; at least one spreading member formed at the distal section of the shaft, wherein the at least one spreading member comprises a free distal end that, in an unactuated position, is disposed substantially close to the central axis, and when actuated moves laterally away from the central axis to disrupt the vascular occlusion; and an actuating assembly positioned along the elongated shaft to laterally move the distal end of the at least one spreading member in response to an actuation force, wherein the actuating assembly includes an inflatable element that expands against the at least one spreading member.
- 5. The catheter of claim 4, further comprising a housing coupled about the distal section of the catheter shaft, wherein the housing is formed of a unitary piece of deformable material, and wherein at least one slit in the housing forms the at least one spreading member.
- 6. The catheter of claim 4, further comprising a housing coupled about the distal section of the catheter shaft and comprising a distal end and a proximal end, wherein the housing is coupled at its distal end to the at least one spreading member through at least one hinge.
- 7. The catheter of claim 6, wherein the at least one hinge is formed of nitinol wire.
