Claims
- 1. An optical communications network, comprising:
at least one optical line terminal; at least one optical network unit; at least one network termination; the at least one optical line terminal coupled to the at least one optical network unit by an optical communication medium; the at least one optical network unit coupled to the at least one network termination by an electrical communication medium; the at least one optical network unit being adapted to transmit and receive optical signals; and means for controlling the at least one optical network unit so the at least one optical network unit transmits and receives within at least one protocol, wherein the control means uses programmable logic to control substantially all the functionality of the at least one optical network unit.
- 2. The network according to claim 1, wherein the programmable logic comprises a field programmable gate array.
- 3. The network according to claim 2, wherein the at least one optical network unit comprises a plurality of optical network units and the at least one network termination comprises a plurality of network terminations.
- 4. The network according to claim 2, further comprising:
at least one optical distribution node; the at least one optical distribution node situated between the at least one optical line terminal and the at least one optical network unit.
- 5. The network according to claim 1, wherein the programmable logic comprises at least one of ASIC silicon and a customized microship.
- 6. The network according to claim 2, further comprising:
means for updating the field programmable gate array with new logic programming.
- 7. The network according to claim 6, wherein the updating means comprising a transmitted image.
- 8. The network according to claim 2, wherein the at least one optical network unit comprises at least one transceiver.
- 9. An optical network unit in an optical network, comprising:
at least one optical receiver adapted to receive optical signals from an optical line terminal; at least one optical transmitted adapted to transmit optical signals to the optical line terminal; at least one interface adapted to be coupled to at least one network terminal; means for controlling the at least one optical network unit so the at least one optical network unit transmits and receives within at least one protocol, wherein the control means uses programmable logic to control substantially all the functionality of the optical network unit.
- 10. The laser drive according to claim 9, wherein the programmable logic comprises a field programmable gate array.
- 11. The laser drive according to claim 10, wherein the at least one optical receiver and at least one optical transmitter are incorporated into at least one transceiver.
- 12. The laser drive according to claim 10, wherein the control means controls the at least one optical network unit in accordance with asynchronous transfer mode passive optical network protocols.
- 13. The laser drive according to claim 10, wherein the control means controls the at least one optical network unit in accordance with Ethernet passive optical network protocols.
- 14. The laser drive according to claim 10, wherein the control means includes means for receiving images to program the logic of the field programmable gate array.
