Claims
- 1. A cutting guide for resecting the distal femur prior to implanting a prosthetic component, said guide comprising:
a) a block having a plurality of guiding surfaces; and b) coupling means for securing said block to the distal femur.
- 2. A cutting guide according to claim 1 wherein said coupling means is secured to a shaft extending into the medullary canal of said femur.
- 3. A cutting guide according to claim 1 wherein said coupling means is dovetail coupling means.
- 4. A cutting guide according to claim 3, wherein said plurality of guiding surfaces includes:
(a1) an anterior cutting guide surface for resecting the anterior cortex of the femur; (a2) a posterior cutting guide surface for resecting the posterior condyles; (a3) an anterior chamfer cutting guide surface; and (a4) a posterior chamfer cutting guide surface.
- 5. A cutting guide according to claim 3, further comprising a locking set screw coupled to said dovetail coupling means.
- 6. A cutting guide according to claim 3 further comprising an anterior flange defining an anterior box cut template.
- 7. A cutting guide according to claim 3 wherein said dovetail coupling means is located in a rectilinear window defined by said block.
- 8. A cutting guide according to claim 3 wherein said dovetail coupling means is a male dovetail member.
- 9. A cutting guide according to claim 3 wherein said dovetail coupling means is adapted to mate with a dovetail coupling means on a valgus adapter.
- 10. A cutting guide according to claim 3 wherein said block defines medial and lateral pin receiving holes for securing said block to the distal femur.
- 11. A cutting guide according to claim 6 wherein said anterior flange defines a plurality of pin receiving holes for securing said block to the distal femur.
- 12. A cutting guide according to claim 3 wherein said block includes a plurality of scribe lines to aid in positioning.
- 13. A cutting guide according to claim 1 wherein said coupling means is a keyed coupling.
- 14. A valgus adapter for use with a cutting guide having a first coupling, said valgus adapter comprising:
a) an adapter shaft; and b) an adapter footing coupled to said adapter shaft, said adapter footing having a second coupling adapted to mate with said first coupling.
- 15. A valgus adapter according to claim 14 wherein said first coupling is a dovetail coupling and said second coupling is a dovetail coupling adapted to mate with said first coupling.
- 16. A valgus adapter according to claim 15 wherein said adapter shaft has a rod coupling for coupling it to an IM rod.
- 17. A valgus adapter according to claim 16 wherein said rod coupling is a threaded coupling.
- 18. A valgus adapter according to claim 16 wherein said rod coupling is offset 6° from said dovetail coupling.
- 19. A valgus adapter for use with a cutting guide, said valgus adapter comprising:
a) an adapter shaft; b) an offset adapter rotatably coupled to said adapter shaft; c) an adapter footing rotatably coupled to said offset adapter, said adapter footing having coupling means for coupling to the cutting guide, such that said adapter footing is free to rotate in an orbit about said adapter shaft.
- 20. A valgus adapter according to claim 19 further comprising indicia on one of said adapter footing and said offset adapter for indicating the angular position of said adapter footing relative to said offset adapter.
- 21. A valgus adapter according to claim 20 wherein said indicia includes a reverse clock face on said adapter footing and a pointer on said offset adapter.
- 22. A valgus adapter according to claim 19 further comprising a first retaining pin, wherein said adapter shaft has a first spindle with a first circumferential groove, said offset adapter has a spindle bore and a first orthogonal pin hole, and said first spindle is rotatably secured in said spindle bore by said first retaining pin in said first orthogonal pin hole.
- 23. A valgus adapter according to claim 22 further comprising second retaining pin, wherein said offset adapter has a second spindle with a second circumferential groove, said adapter footing has a spindle throughbore and a second orthogonal pin hole, and said second spindle is rotatably secured in said spindle throughbore by said second retaining pin in said second orthogonal pin hole.
- 24. A valgus adapter according to claim 23 wherein said second spindle has first indicia on its end, and said adapter footing has second indicia surrounding said spindle throughbore.
- 25. A valgus adapter according to claim 19 wherein said adapter shaft has a rod coupling for coupling it to an IM rod.
- 26. A valgus adapter according to claim 25 wherein said rod coupling is a threaded coupling.
- 27. A valgus adapter according to claim 25 wherein said rod coupling is offset 6° from said coupling.
- 28. A set of tools for resecting the distal femur prior to implanting a prosthetic component, said guide comprising:
a) a valgus adapter for attachment to an IM rod, said valgus adapter including:
a-1) an adapter shaft; and a-2) an adapter footing coupled to said adapter shaft, said adapter footing having a first coupling, and b) a cutting guide, said cutting guide including:
b-1) a block having a plurality of guiding surfaces, and b-2) a second coupling adapted to mate with said first coupling.
- 29. A set of tools according to claim 28 wherein said first coupling is a dovetail coupling and said second coupling is a dovetail coupling adapted to mate with the first dovetail coupling.
- 30. A set of tools according to claim 29 wherein:
said plurality of guiding surfaces includes: (b-1-1) an anterior cutting guide surface for resecting the anterior cortex of the femur; (b-1-2) a posterior cutting guide surface for resecting the posterior condyles; (b-1-3) an anterior chamfer cutting guide surface; and (b-1-4) a posterior chamfer cutting guide surface.
- 31. A set of tools according to claim 29 wherein said cutting guide further includes a locking set screw coupled to said second dovetail coupling.
- 32. A set of tools according to claim 29 wherein said cutting guide further includes an anterior flange defining an anterior box cut template.
- 33. A set of tools according to claim 29 wherein said second dovetail coupling is located in a rectilinear window defined by said block.
- 34. A set of tools according to claim 29 wherein said second dovetail coupling is a male dovetail member.
- 35. A set of tools according to claim 29 wherein said block defines medial and lateral pin receiving holes for securing said block to the distal femur.
- 36. A set of tools according to claim 32 wherein said anterior flange defines a plurality of pin receiving holes for securing said block to the distal femur.
- 37. A set of tools according to claim 29 wherein said block includes a plurality of scribe lines to aid in positioning.
- 38. A set of tools according to claim 29 wherein said adapter shaft has a rod coupling for coupling it to an IM rod.
- 39. A set of tools according to claim 38 wherein said rod coupling is a threaded coupling.
- 40. A set of tools according to claim 38 wherein said rod coupling is offset 6° from said dovetail coupling.
- 41. A set of tools for resecting the distal femur prior to implanting a prosthetic component, said guide comprising:
a) a valgus adapter for attachment to an IM rod, said valgus adapter including:
a-1) an adapter shaft; a-2) an offset adapter rotatably coupled to said adapter shaft; a-3) an adapter footing rotatably coupled to said offset adapter, said adapter footing having a first coupling means for coupling to the cutting guide, such that said adapter footing is free to rotate in an orbit about said adapter shaft; and b) a cutting guide, said cutting guide including:
b-1) a block having a plurality of guiding surfaces; and b-2) a second coupling means adapted to mate with said first coupling means.
- 42. A set of tools according to claim 41 wherein said plurality of guiding surfaces includes:
(b-1-1) an anterior cutting guide surface for resecting the anterior cortex of the femur; (b-1-2) a posterior cutting guide surface for resecting the posterior condyles; (b-1-3) an anterior chamfer cutting guide surface; and (b-1-4) a posterior chamfer cutting guide surface.
- 43. A set of tools according to claim 41 wherein said cutting guide further includes a locking set screw coupled to said second coupling means.
- 44. A set of tools according to claim 41 wherein said cutting guide further includes an anterior flange defining an anterior box cut template.
- 45. A set of tools according to claim 41 wherein said second coupling means is located in a rectilinear window defined by said block.
- 46. A set of tools according to claim 41 wherein said second coupling means is a male coupling member.
- 47. A set of tools according to claim 41 wherein said block defines medial and lateral pin receiving holes for securing said block to the distal femur.
- 48. A set of tools according to claim 44 wherein said anterior flange defines a plurality of pin receiving holes for securing said block to the distal femur.
- 49. A set of tools according to claim 41 wherein said block includes a plurality of scribe lines to aid in positioning.
- 50. A set of tools according to claim 41 wherein said valgus adapter further includes indicia on one of said adapter footing and said offset adapter for indicating the angular position of said adapter footing relative to said offset adapter.
- 51. A set of tools according to claim 50 wherein said indicia includes a reverse clock face on said adapter footing and a pointer on said offset adapter.
- 52. A set of tools according to claim 41 wherein said valgus adapter further includes a first retaining pin, where in said adapter shaft has a first spindle with a first circumferential groove, said offset adapter has a spindle bore and a first orthogonal pin hole, and said first spindle is rotatably secured in said spindle bore by said first retaining pin in said first orthogonal pin hole.
- 53. A set of tools according to claim 52 wherein said valgus adapter further includes a second retaining pin, wherein said offset adapter has a second spindle with a second circumferential groove, said adapter footing has a spindle throughbore and a second orthogonal pin hole, and said second spindle is rotatably secured in said spindle throughbore by said second retaining pin in said second orthogonal pin hole.
- 54. A set of tools according to claim 53 wherein said second spindle has first indicia on its end, and said adapter footing has second indicia surrounding said spindle throughbore.
- 55. A set of tools according to claim 41 wherein said adapter shaft has a rod coupling for coupling it to an IM rod.
- 56. A set of tools according to claim 55 wherein said rod coupling is a threaded coupling.
- 57. A set of tools according to claim 50 wherein said rod coupling is offset 6° from said first coupling means.
- 58. A method of resecting the distal femur prior to implanting a prosthetic component, said method comprising the steps of:
a) coupling a valgus adapter to the distal femur; and b) coupling a cutting guide to the valgus adapter via a first coupling.
- 59. A method according to claim 58 wherein said first coupling is a dovetail coupling.
- 60. A method according to claim 59 further comprising the step of orbiting the cutting guide relative to the valgus adapter.
- 61. A method as set forth in claim 59 further comprising the step of determining the internal-external rotation of the femoral component.
- 62. A method as set forth in claim 61 wherein said step of determining the internal-external rotation of the femoral component is performed by placing the cutting guide on a spacer block when the knee is in flexion.
- 63. A method as set forth in claim 61 wherein said step of determining the internal-external rotation of the femoral component is performed by inserting quick release handles into holes in an all in one guide and insuring that the handles are parallel to the transepicondylar axis.
- 64. A method according to claim 61 further comprising the step of pinning the cutting guide to the distal femur.
- 65. A method according to claim 64 further comprising the step of recording the angular position of the cutting guide.
- 66. A method according to claim 65 further comprising the step of resecting the distal femur.
- 67. A method of resecting the distal femur prior to implanting a prosthetic component, said method comprising the steps of:
a) coupling a valgus adapter to the distal femur; b) coupling a cutting guide to the valgus adapter via an orbital coupling; and c) orbiting the cutting guide relative to the valgus adapter.
- 68. A method according to claim 67 further comprising the step of pinning the cutting guide to the distal femur.
- 69. A method according to claim 68 further comprising the step of recording the angular position of the cutting guide.
- 70. A method according to claim 69 further comprising the step of resecting the distal femur.
