Claims
- 1. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber comprising transporting the fiber to a treating station and subjecting the fiber at said treating station to a combination of outward centrifugal forces balanced against inward aerodynamic drag forces to achieve controlled release and separation of foreign matter in particle sizes of predetermined classifications.
- 2. A method in accordance with claim 1, which comprises transporting the fiber including foreign matter to a region proximal to the outer surface of a rotating cylinder having perforations through which a transport gas flow is drawn radially inwardly, outward centrifugal forces being imparted by the rotating cylinder to any particles which enter the perforations and are carried thereby, and inward aerodynamic drag forces being imparted to particles by the inward gas flow through the perforations.
- 3. A method in accordance with claim 1, which comprises transporting the fiber including foreign matter to a region proximal to the outer surface of a rotating cylinder adjacent to a counterflow slot, outward forces in a direction towards the counterflow slot being imparted to particles by being centrifugally thrown by the rotating cylinder, and inward aerodynamic drag forces being imparted to particles within the counterflow slot by inward gas flow through the counterflow slot.
- 4. A method in accordance with claim 3, wherein the rotating cylinder has perforations through which a transport gas flow is drawn radially inwardly, outward centrifugal forces being imparted by the rotating cylinder to any particles which enter the perforations and are carried thereby, and inward aerodynamic drag forces being imparted to particles by the inward gas flow through the perforations.
- 5. A method in accordance with claim 1, which further comprises subjecting the fiber to carding action at the treating station.
- 6. A method in accordance with claim 1, which comprises releasing the foreign matter from the fiber by application of aeromechanical hook forces to the fiber employing a combination of moving and stationary projections.
- 7. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber comprising transporting the fiber to a treating station and subjecting the fiber at said treating station to a combination of outward impact forces balanced against inward aerodynamic drag forces to achieve controlled release and separation of foreign matter in particle sizes of predetermined classifications.
- 8. A method in accordance with claim 7, which comprises transporting the fiber including foreign matter to a region proximal to the outer surface of a pinned rotating cylinder adjacent to a counterflow slot, outward forces in a direction towards the counterflow slot being imparted to particles by impaction from the pins carried by the rotating cylinder, and inward aerodynamic drag forces being imparted to particles within the counterflow slot by inward gas flow through the counterflow slot.
- 9. A method in accordance with claim 4, which comprises releasing the foreign matter and fiber by application of aeromechanical hook forces to the fiber employing a combination of moving and stationary projections.
- 10. A method in accordance with claim 7, which further comprises subjecting the fiber to carding action at the treating station.
- 11. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber comprising transporting the fiber to a treating station and subjecting the fiber at said treating station to a combination of aeromechanical forces to achieve controlled release and separation of foreign matter in particle sizes of predetermined classifications the foreign matter being separated into particle sizes of predetermined aerodynamic equivalent diameter (AED) classifications of
- (a) <50 .mu.m, and
- (b) >50 .mu.m.
- 12. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber comprising transporting the fiber to a treating station and subjecting the fiber at said treating station to a combination of aeromechanical forces to achieve controlled release and separation of foreign matter in particle sizes of predetermined classifications, the foreign matter being separated into particle sizes of predetermined aerodynamic equivalent diameter (AED) classifications of
- (a) <500 .mu.m, and
- (b) >500 .mu.m.
- 13. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber comprising:
- transporting the fiber including foreign matter to a treating station and subjecting the fiber at said treating station to a combination of outward centrifugal forces balanced against inward aerodynamic drag forces to achieve controlled release and separation of foreign matter and fiber in particle sizes of predetermined classifications, the predetermined classifications including a component of fiber and foreign matter having relatively larger aerodynamic equivalent diameters and a component of fiber and foreign matter having relatively smaller aerodynamic equivalent diameters; and
- transporting the component of fiber and foreign matter having relatively smaller aerodynamic equivalent diameters to a region proximal to a surface having perforations through which a transport gas flow is drawn for further separation of the foreign matter from the fiber according to passage or nonpassage through the perforations.
- 14. A method in accordance with claim 13, wherein the step of transporting the component having relatively smaller aerodynamic equivalent diameters to a region proximal a surface having perforations through which a transport gas flow is drawn for further separation according to passage or nonpassage through the perforations comprises transporting the component having relatively smaller aerodynamic equivalent diameters to a region proximal to the outer surface of a rotating cylinder having perforations through which the transport gas flow is drawn.
- 15. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber comprising:
- transporting the fiber including foreign matter to a treating station and subjecting the fiber at said treating station to a combination of outward impact forces balanced against inward aerodynamic drag forces to achieve controlled release and separation of foreign matter and fiber in particle sizes of predetermined classifications, the predetermined classifications including a component of fiber and foreign matter having relatively larger aerodynamic equivalent diameters and a component of fiber and foreign matter having relatively smaller aerodynamic equivalent diameters; and
- transporting the component of fiber and including foreign matter having relatively smaller aerodynamic equivalent diameters to a region proximal to a surface having perforations through which a transport gas flow is drawn for further separation of such that the foreign matter from the fiber is separated into predetermined classifications according to passage or nonpassage through the perforations.
- 16. A method in accordance with claim 15, wherein the step of transporting the component having relatively smaller aerodynamic equivalent diameters to a region proximal a surface having perforations through which a transport gas flow is drawn for further separation according to passage or nonpassage through the perforations comprises transporting the component having relatively smaller aerodynamic equivalent diameters to a region proximal to the outer surface of a rotating cylinder having perforations through which the transport gas flow is drawn.
- 17. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber comprising transporting the fiber to a treating station and subjecting the fiber at said treating station to a combination of aeromechanical forces to achieve controlled release and separation of foreign matter and fiber in particle sizes of predetermined classifications the predetermined classifications including a component of fiber and foreign matter having relatively larger aerodynamic equivalent diameters and a component of fiber and foreign matter having relatively smaller aerodynamic equivalent diameters; and
- transporting the component of fiber and foreign matter having relatively smaller aerodynamic equivalent diameters to a region proximal to a surface having perforations appropriately sized and through which a transport gas flow is drawn for further separation of the foreign matter from the fiber in predetermined particle sizes smaller or larger than 50 .mu.m according to respective passage or nonpassage through the perforations.
- 18. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber comprising transporting the fiber to a treating station and subjecting the fiber at said treating station to a combination of aeromechanical forces to achieve controlled release and separation of foreign matter and fiber in particle sizes of predetermined classifications the predetermined classifications including a component of fiber and foreign matter having relatively larger aerodynamic equivalent diameters and a component of fiber and foreign matter having relatively smaller aerodynamic equivalent diameters; and
- transporting the fiber including foreign matter to a region proximal to a surface having perforations appropriately sized and through which a transport gas flow is drawn such that the foreign matter is separated into predetermined particle sizes smaller or larger than 500 .mu.m according to respective passage or nonpassage through the perforations.
- 19. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber comprising transporting the fiber to a treating station and subjecting the fiber at said treating station to a combination of aeromechanical forces to achieve controlled release and separation of foreign matter and fiber in particles sizes of predetermined classifications the predetermined classifications including a component of fiber and foreign matter having relatively larger aerodynamic equivalent diameters and a component of fiber and foreign matter having relatively smaller aerodynamic equivalent diameters; and
- transporting the fiber including foreign matter to a region proximal to a surface having perforations appropriately sized and through which a transport gas flow is drawn such that the foreign matter is separated into predetermined particle sizes smaller or larger than 1500 .mu.m according to respective passage or nonpassage through the perforations.
- 20. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber comprising transporting the fiber including foreign matter to a first treating station and subjecting the fiber at said first treating station to a combination of aeromechanical forces to achieve controlled release and separation of foreign matter in particle sizes of predetermined classifications; and
- transporting the fiber including foreign matter to a region proximal to a stationary wall having perforations through which a transport gas flow is drawn such that the fiber and foreign matter are separated into predetermined classifications according to passage or nonpassage through the perforations.
- 21. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber, comprising:
- providing a treating element for imparting aeromechanical forces to the fiber including foreign matter for releasing the foreign matter from the fiber, which forces tend to throw at least foreign matter particles outwardly from the treating element; and
- causing a transport gas flow towards the treating element in a direction counter to the direction of particles thrown outwardly from the treating element so as to achieve controlled separation of foreign matter in particle sizes of predetermined aerodynamic classifications.
- 22. A method in accordance with claim 21 which comprises confining the counter gas flow to a slot defined by walls.
- 23. A method in accordance with claim 21, which comprises separating the foreign matter into aerodynamic size classifications of:
- (a) <50 .mu.m,
- (b) >50 to <500 .mu.m, and
- (c) >500 .mu.m.
- 24. A method in accordance with claim 21, wherein fibers are caused to return to the treating station and foreign matter particles of predetermined size are caused to move outward from the treating station through the counter flow gas and thereby separated according to aerodynamic classification.
- 25. A method in accordance with claim 24, wherein foreign matter particles having aerodynamic diameter >50 .mu.m are released and separated from the fiber.
- 26. A method in accordance with claim 24, wherein foreign matter particles having aerodynamic diameter >500 .mu.m are released and separated from the fiber.
- 27. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber comprising transporting the fiber to a treating station and subjecting the fiber at the treating station to a combination of aeromechanical forces to achieve controlled release and separtion of foreign matter in particle sizes of predetermined classifications, there being provided least one treating element which causes released particles to move counter to a first, inward gas flow for distances according to their size, such that aerodynamically larger particles move larger distances than small particles, and such that predetermined particle sizes are separated upon travelling to or beyond a region of a second gas flow wherein the gas flow direction changes, such that particles reaching the second gas flow region are caused to move in the direction of the second flow and are thereby separated and collected.
- 28. A method in accordance with claim 27, wherein foreign matter particles having aerodynamic diameter >50 .mu.m are separated and collected.
- 29. A method in accordance with claim 27, wherein foreign matter particles having aerodynamic diameter >500 .mu.m are separated and collected.
- 30. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber comprising:
- transporting the fiber to a treating station and subjecting the fiber at the treating station to a combination of aeromechanical forces to achieve controlled release and separation of foreign matter in particle sizes of predetermined classifications; and
- further subjecting the fiber to electrodynamic forces.
- 31. A method for treating fiber for release and separation of foreign matter from the fiber comprising transporting the fiber to a first treating station and subjecting the fiber at said first treating station to a combination of aeromechanical forces to achieve controlled release and separation of foreign matter in particle sizes of predetermined classifications, wherein the fiber is carried about a circular path at the treating station and subjected to a radially inward aerodynamic force for separation of mirodust and respirable dust particles of <50 .mu.m AED.
CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
This is a continuation of a copending U.S. patent application Ser. No. 716,149, filed Mar. 26, 1985, now abandoned, which is a division of then-copending U.S. patent application Ser. No. 552,061, filed Nov. 15, 1983, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,512,060, which is in turn a continuation-in-part of then-copending application Ser. No. 428,608 filed Sept. 30, 1982, and now abandoned. A concurrently-filed related application entitled "Conditioned Gas Flow Methods for Processing and Cleaning Fiber, Including Aeromechanical and Electrodynamic Release and Separation of Foreign Matter from Fiber" is Ser. No. 826,903, filed Feb. 6, 1986, which is a continuation of Ser. No. 716,175, filed Mar. 26, 1985, now abandoned, which is also a division of application Ser. No. 552,061, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,512,060.
