Claims
- 1. A method of disassembling valve assemblies in internal combustion engines, said valve assemblies being of the type including a valve, a valve spring, a spring retainer and a plurality of keepers for said retainer, said method comprising the steps of:
- 1. providing tools including pivotal tool means for depressing said valve springs and hollow, cylindrical tool means for engaging said spring retainer including means for releasing said keepers;
- 2. mounting said tools on the cylinder head and at least one valve assembly of an engine;
- 3. depressing said valve spring and spring retainer with said tools until said keepers are released onto said releasing means; and
- 4. withdrawing said released keepers from the valve assembly and thereafter releasing said valve spring and raising said spring retainer with said tools.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said pivotal tool means includes at least one rocker member pivotally mounted on a support and threaded means for pivoting said rocker member; said mounting step includes attaching said pivotal tool means to said cylinder head, inserting said hollow, cylindrical tool means on said spring retainer after removing and valve tappet from the top of said valve assembly, and arranging said rocker member such that its end engages said cylindrical tool means and holds said cylindrical tool means against said spring retainer.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said releasing means includes an inclined, annular shoulder intermediate the ends of said cylindrical tool means, said shoulder merging into a cylindrical bore in said cylindrical tool means; said depressing step including pivoting said end of said rocker member downwardly against said cylindrical tool means with said threaded means thereby moving said retainer away from said keepers and allowing said keepers to fall away from the stem of said valve onto said annular shoulder for retrieval through said cylindrical bore.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said releasing step includes retrieving said keepers from said cylindrical tool means, pivoting said end of said rocker member upwardly with said threaded means to release all compression from said valve spring, and thereafter removing said cylindrical tool means.
- 5. A method of assembling valve assemblies in internal combustion engines, said valve assemblies being of the type including a valve, a valve spring a spring retainer, and a plurality of keepers for said retainer, said valve including a stem and means for holding said keepers on said stem, said method comprising:
- 1. providing tools including pivotal tool means for depressing said valve springs and hollow, cylindrical tool means for engaging said spring retainer including means for guiding and inserting said keepers;
- 2. mounting said tools on the cylinder head and at least one valve assembly of an engine;
- 3. depressing said valve spring and spring retainer with said tools to a position below said keeper holding means on said valve stem;
- 4. placing said keepers in said cylindrical tool means such that they are guided and inserted onto said spring retainer and against said valve stem; and
- 5. releasing said valve spring and raising said spring retainer with said tools while said spring retainer guides said keepers into position in said keeper holding means on said valve stem.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein said pivotal tool means includes at least one rocker member pivotally mounted on a support and threaded means for pivoting said rocker member; said mounting step includes attaching said pivotal tool means to said cylinder head, inserting said hollow, cylindrical tool means on said spring retainer, and arranging said rocker member such that its end engages said cylindrical tool means and holds said cylindrical tool means against said valve retainer.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein said guiding and inserting means includes an inclined, annular shoulder intermediate the ends of said cylindrical tool means, said shoulder merging into a cylindrical bore in said cylindrical tool means; said depressing step including pivtoting said end of said rocker member downwardly against said cylindrical tool means with said threaded means.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein said placing step includes placing said keepers within said bore on said shoulder such that said shoulder guides them against said retainer and valve stem in preparation for location in said keeper holding means.
- 9. The method of claim 6 wherein said releasing step includes pivoting said end of said rocker member upwardly with said threaded means to release all compression from said valve spring and raise said cylindrical tool means and retainer.
