Claims
- 1. A method of connecting a lead wire extending from a coil portion wound on a pole of a stator core to at least one of a plurality of terminals, said method comprising a series of steps of:
- a. providing a wire manipulating device having a longitudinal axis, said wire manipulating device being capable of translational movement in the plane of said plurality of terminals and rotational movement about said longitudinal axis;
- b. actuating said wire manipulating device to engage at a point of engagement said lead wire extending from said coil portion;
- c. actuating said wire manipulating device to translate and rotate said lead wire about said point of engagement to dispose said lead wire along a complex path, so that said lead wire is aligned with any one of said plurality of terminals; and
- d. engaging said lead wire with said one of said plurality of terminals.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said point of engagement is yieldably grasped so that said lead wire runs through said wire manipulating device in a controlled manner.
- 3. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein at least one of said plurality said terminals includes a slot and wherein step (d) comprises inserting said lead wire in said slot.
- 4. The method as defined in claim 3 further comprising a step of providing a wire insertion device and step (d) comprises actuating said wire insertion device.
- 5. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein at least one of said plurality of terminals includes a tab and a hook-like finger and wherein step (d) comprises positioning said lead wire between said tab and said hook-like finger and then clamping said hook-like finger against said tab to capture said lead wire securely therebetween.
- 6. The method as defined in claim 5 further comprising a step of providing clamping jaws and wherein step (d) comprises actuating said clamping jaws to clamp said hook-like finger against said tab.
- 7. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein at least one of said plurality of terminals includes a V-shaped portion having flexible opposing wings and wherein step (d) comprises positioning said lead wire between said flexible opposing wings and then clamping said flexible opposing wings together to capture said lead wire securely therebetween.
- 8. The method as defined in claim 7 further comprising a step of providing clamping jaws and wherein step (d) comprises actuating said clamping jaws to clamp said flexible opposing wings together.
- 9. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein step (c) further comprises partially engaging said lead wire with said one of said plurality of terminals.
- 10. The method as defined in claim 1 further comprising a step (e) of severing said lead wire beyond a point of engagement of said lead wire with said one of said plurality of terminals.
- 11. The method as defined in claim 10 further comprising a step of providing a wire cutting device and step e comprises actuating said wire cutting device to sever said lead wire.
- 12. The method as defined in claim 11 wherein the step of providing a wire cutting device comprises providing a wire cutting device capable of translational movement in the plane of said plurality of terminals and rotational movement about said longitudinal axis.
- 13. A method of connecting a lead wire extending from a coil portion wound on a pole of a stator core to a plurality of terminals, said method comprising a series of steps of:
- a. providing a wire manipulating device having a longitudinal axis, said wire manipulating device being capable of translational movement in the plane of said plurality of terminals and rotational movement about said longitudinal axis;
- b. actuating said wire manipulating device to engage at a point of engagement said lead wire extending from said coil portion;
- c. actuating said wire manipulating device to translate and rotate said lead wire about said point of engagement to dispose said lead wire along a complex path so that said lead wire is aligned with a first one of said plurality of terminals;
- d. engaging said lead wire with said first one of said plurality of terminals; and
- e. repeating steps (c) and (d) with said lead wire for other ones of said plurality of terminals until said lead wire is serially engaged with each one of said plurality of terminals.
- 14. The method of claim 13 wherein said point of engagement is yieldably grasped so that said lead wire runs through said wire manipulating device in a controlled manner.
- 15. The method as defined in claim 13 wherein at least two of said plurality of terminals include a slot, wherein steps (d) and (e) comprise inserting said lead wire in said slot of at least two of said plurality of terminals, and the method further comprises a step of providing a wire insertion device and steps (d) and (e) comprise actuating said wire insertion device.
- 16. The method as defined in claim 13 wherein at least two of said plurality of terminals include flexible lead wire retaining means, wherein steps (d) and (e) comprise positioning said lead wire within said flexible lead wire retaining means and then clamping said flexible lead wire retaining means to capture said lead wire securely therein.
- 17. The method as defined in claim 16 further comprising a step of providing clamping jaws and wherein steps (d) and (e) comprise actuating said clamping jaws to clamp said flexible lead wire retaining means.
- 18. The method as defined in claim 13 wherein steps (c) and (e) further comprise partially engaging said lead wire with said first one and other ones, respectively, of said plurality of terminals.
- 19. The method as defined in claim 13 further comprising a step (f) of severing said lead wire beyond a point of engagement of said lead wire with a last one of said plurality of terminals.
- 20. The method as defined in claim 19 further comprising a step of providing a wire cutting device and step (f) comprises actuating said wire cutting device to sever said lead wire.
- 21. The method as defined in claim 20 wherein the step of providing a wire cutting device comprises providing a wire cutting device capable of translational movement in the plane of said plurality of terminals and rotational movement about said longitudinal axis.
- 22. A method of connecting a lead wire extending from a coil portion wound on a pole of a stator core to a terminal means located on a stator terminal board, said method comprising a series of steps of:
- a. providing a wire manipulating device having a longitudinal axis, said wire manipulating device being capable of translational movement in the plane of said terminal means and rotational movement about said longitudinal axis;
- b. actuating said wire manipulating device to engage said lead wire;
- c. actuating said wire manipulating device to translate and rotate said lead wire to route said lead wire along a complex path through a series of projections extending from the stator terminal board, said complex path involving several substantial directional changes, until said lead wire is aligned with said terminal means; and
- d. engaging said lead wire with said terminal means.
- 23. The method as defined in claim 22 wherein said terminal means includes a slot, wherein step (d) comprises inserting said lead wire in said slot, and the method further comprises a step of providing a wire insertion device and step (d) comprises actuating said wire insertion device.
- 24. The method as defined in claim 22 wherein said terminal means includes flexible lead wire retaining means, wherein step (d) comprises positioning said lead wire within said flexible lead wire retaining means and then clamping said flexible lead wire retaining means to capture said lead wire securely therein.
- 25. The method as defined in claim 24 further comprising a step of providing clamping jaws and wherein step (d) comprises actuating said clamping jaws to clamp said flexible lead wire retaining means.
- 26. The method as defined in claim 22 wherein step (c) further comprises partially engaging said lead wire with said terminal means.
- 27. The method as defined in claim 22 further comprising a step (e) of severing said lead wire beyond a point of engagement of said lead wire with said terminal means.
- 28. The method as defined in claim 27 further comprising a step of providing a wire cutting device and step (e) comprises actuating said wire cutting device to sever said lead wire.
- 29. The method as defined in claim 28 wherein the step of providing a wire cutting device comprises providing a wire cutting device capable of translational movement in the plane of said terminal means and rotational movement about said longitudinal axis.
- 30. A method of connecting a lead wire extending from a coil portion wound on a pole of a stator core to a plurality of terminal means located on a stator terminal board, said method comprising a series of steps of:
- a. providing a wire manipulating device having a longitudinal axis, said wire manipulating device being capable of translational movement in the plane of said plurality of terminal means and rotational movement about said longitudinal axis;
- b. actuating said wire manipulating device to engage said lead wire;
- c. actuating said wire manipulating device to translate and rotate said lead wire to route said lead wire along a complex path involving several substantial directional changes until said lead wire is aligned with a first one of said plurality of terminal means;
- d. engaging said lead wire with said first one of said plurality of terminal means; and
- e. repeating steps (c) and (d) with said lead wire for other ones of said plurality of terminal means until said lead wire is serially engaged with each one of said plurality of terminal means.
- 31. The method as defined in claim 30 wherein each one of said plurality of terminal means includes a slot, wherein steps (d) and (e) comprise inserting said lead wire in said slot of each one of said plurality of terminal means, and the method further comprises a step of providing a wire insertion device and steps (d) and (e) comprise actuating said wire insertion device.
- 32. The method as defined in claim 30 wherein each one of said plurality of terminal means includes flexible lead wire retaining means, wherein steps (d) and (e) comprise positioning said lead wire within each one of said flexible lead wire retaining means and then clamping each one of said flexible lead wire retaining means to capture said lead wire securely therein.
- 33. The method as defined in claim 32 further comprising a step of providing clamping jaws and wherein steps (d) and (e) comprise actuating said clamping jaws to clamp said flexible lead wire retaining means.
- 34. The method as defined in claim 30 wherein steps (c) and (e) further comprise partially engaging said lead wire with said first one and other ones, respectively, of said plurality of terminal means.
- 35. The method as defined in claim 30 further comprising a step (f) of severing said lead wire beyond a point of engagement of said lead wire with a last one of said plurality of terminal means.
- 36. The method as defined in claim 35 further comprising a step of providing a wire cutting device and step (f) comprises actuating said wire cutting device to sever said lead wire.
- 37. The method as defined in claim 36 wherein the step of providing a wire cutting device comprises providing a wire cutting device capable of translational movement in the plane of said plurality of terminal means and rotational movement about said longitudinal axis.
- 38. A method of connecting each one of a plurality of lead wires extending from a stator core to respective ones of a plurality of terminal means located on a stator terminal board, said method comprising a series of steps of:
- a. providing a wire manipulating device having a longitudinal axis, said wire manipulating device being capable of translational movement in the plane of said plurality of terminal means and rotational movement about said longitudinal axis;
- b. actuating said lead wire manipulating device to engage a first lead wire of said plurality of lead wires;
- c. actuating said lead wire manipulating device to translate and rotate said first lead wire to dispose said first lead wire along a complex path, so that said first lead wire is aligned with a respective one of said plurality of terminal means;
- d. engaging said first lead wire with said respective one of said plurality of terminal means; and
- e. repeating steps (b) through (d) with other ones of said plurality of lead wires and for other respective ones of said plurality of terminal means until each one of said plurality of lead wires is engaged with a respective one of said plurality of terminal means.
- 39. The method as defined in claim 38 wherein each one of said respective ones of said plurality of terminal means includes a slot, wherein for each one of said plurality of lead wires and its respective one of said plurality of terminal means steps (d) and (e) comprise inserting said lead wire in said slot of said terminal means, and the method further comprises a step of providing a wire insertion device and steps (d) and (e) comprise actuating said wire insertion device.
- 40. The method as defined in claim 38 wherein each one of said respective ones of said plurality of terminal means includes flexible lead wire retaining means, wherein for each one of said plurality of lead wires and its respective one of said plurality of terminal means steps (d) and (e) comprise positioning said lead wire within said flexible lead wire retaining means and then clamping said flexible lead wire retaining means to capture said lead wire securely therein.
- 41. The method as defined in claim 40 further comprising a step of providing clamping jaws and wherein steps (d) and (e) comprise actuating said clamping jaws to clamp said flexible lead wire retaining means.
- 42. The method as defined in claim 38 wherein step (c) further comprises partially engaging said first lead wire with said respective one of said plurality of terminal means and step (e) further comprises partially engaging other ones of said plurality of lead wires with other respective ones of said plurality of terminal means.
- 43. The method as defined in claim 38 further comprising a step (f) before step (e) of severing said first lead wire beyond a point of engagement of said first lead wire with said respective one of said plurality of terminal means and severing other ones of said plurality of lead wires beyond points of engagement for other respective ones of said plurality of terminal means.
- 44. The method as defined in claim 43 further comprising a step of providing a wire cutting device and step (f) comprises actuating said wire cutting device.
- 45. The method as defined in claim 44 wherein the step of providing a wire cutting device comprises providing a wire cutting device capable of translational movement in the plane of said plurality of terminal means and rotational movement about said longitudinal axis.
