Claims
- 1. A method of making fine particles comprising
(a) dissolved a material in a solvent to form a dilute solution; (b) immobilizing the dilution solution; and (c) removing the solvent from the immobilized solution, thereby yielding fine particles of the material.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the fine particles have a diameter between about 0.5 μm and about 10 μm.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the material is a protein or peptide.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the solvent is aqueous.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the immobilization method is selected from the group consisting of freezing, gelation, and chelation.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the solvent is removed by reducing the ambient pressure of the immobilized solution without addition of heat to the solution in an amount sufficient to power a phase transition.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the dilute solution of step (a) is atomized immediately before immobilization.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the dilute solution is atomized directly into a liquid which is a nonsolvent for the material and which is at a temperature low enough to freeze the dilute solution.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the liquid is selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, argon, oxygen, helium, and carbon dioxide.
- 10. The method of claim 7 wherein the dilute solution is atomized directly into a vessel containing a gas which is a nonsolvent for the material and which is at a temperature low enough to freeze the dilute solution.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the atomized dilute solution falls within the vessel under the influence of gravity and contacts a countercurrent stream of the gas.
- 12. An apparatus for the formation of fine powders comprising
an atomizer for atomizing a solution of a material dissolved in a solvent; a vessel comprising a means for immobilizing the solution following atomization; and a means for removing the solvent from the immobilized solution.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the means for immobilizing the solution comprises a fluid which is a nonsolvent for the material and is at a temperature low enough to freeze the dilute solution.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the vessel comprises a column having a vent near a top end of the column and the fluid is in liquid form near a bottom end of the column, wherein the apparatus further comprises a means for controlling the rate of heat added to the liquid.
