Claims
- 1. A method of forming a thermoformed recloseable flat package for a pill-like product, said method comprising:
operably engaging a first enclosure portion having a closing member with a second enclosure portion so as to form an enclosure for containing the product therein, each enclosure portion having a major surface such that the major surfaces of the respective enclosure portions are generally parallel when the first and second enclosure portions are operably engaged; forming a component of a locking mechanism following formation of the enclosure, the locking mechanism generally comprising a first component operably engaging the closing member and a second component operably engaging the second enclosure portion, the first component corresponding to, and configured to operably engage, the second component to secure the closing member to the second enclosure portion, the components of the locking mechanism being farther configured to be separable so as to allow separation thereabout of the closing member from the second enclosure portion to thereby define the recloseable package capable of selectively allowing the product to be extracted from the enclosure.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the second component comprises an aperture defined by the second enclosure portion and forming a component of the locking mechanism further comprises forming the first component by fabricating a projection from the closing member such that the projection is capable of removably engaging the aperture.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 wherein the second component defines a lip and forming a component of the locking mechanism further comprises forming the first component by fabricating a projection from the closing member such that the projection is configured in an interference fit with the lip.
- 4. A method according to claim 1 wherein the second enclosure portion further comprises a peripheral flange operably engaging the closing member and forming a component of the locking mechanism further comprises undercutting the peripheral flange such that one portion of the peripheral flange is operably engaged with the closing member and defines the first component while the other portion of the peripheral flange defines the second component, the first and second components being further configured in an interference fit therebetween.
- 5. A method according to claim 1 further comprising housing the product within at least one of the first enclosure portion and the second enclosure portion prior to operably engaging the first and second enclosure portions.
- 6. A method according to claim 5 further comprising operably engaging a sealing member with the enclosure portion housing the product prior to operably engaging the first and second enclosure portions.
- 7. A method according to claim 1 further comprising plasticizing a portion of the closing member.
- 8. A method according to claim 7 further comprising reshaping the plasticized portion of the closing member so as to form a projection therefrom, the projection being capable of operably engaging a corresponding feature defined by the second enclosure portion, the feature comprising at least one of an aperture and a lip.
- 9. A method according to claim 8 wherein the portion of the closing member is plasticized by a heated die operably engaged therewith and reshaping the plasticized portion further comprises reshaping the plasticized portion of the closing member, with a mechanism configured to engage the closing member, so as to form the projection, the mechanism comprising at least one of a heated member extending through the die and pressurized air introduced through the die.
- 10. A method according to claim 1 wherein the first enclosure portion is configured to operably engage the second enclosure portion to form a generally parallelepiped enclosure and wherein the method further comprises forming a pair of cuts, each cut extending through at least one of the first enclosure portion and the second enclosure portion, the cuts being separated by a corner of the enclosure to thereby define the closing member as extending between the cuts and from each cut to the corner.
- 11. A method according to claim 10 further comprising scoring between the cuts so as to form a fold line, the closing member being pivotable about the fold line.
- 12. A method of forming a thermoformed recloseable flat package for a pill-like product, said method comprising:
operably engaging a first enclosure portion having a closing member with a second enclosure portion defining at least one aperture component of a locking mechanism so as to form an enclosure for containing the product therein, each enclosure portion having a major surface such that the major surfaces of the respective enclosure portions are generally parallel when the first and second enclosure portions are operably engaged; forming a projection component of the locking mechanism from the closing member following formation of the enclosure, the projection component corresponding to, and configured to operably engage, the at least one aperture component to secure the closing member to the second enclosure portion, the components of the locking mechanism being further configured to be separable so as to allow separation thereabout of the closing member from the second enclosure portion to thereby define the recloseable package capable of selectively allowing the product to be extracted from the enclosure.
- 13. A method according to claim 12 further comprising disposing the product within at least one of the first and second enclosure portions prior to operably engaging the first enclosure portion with the second enclosure portion.
- 14. A method according to claim 13 further comprising operably engaging a sealing member with the enclosure portion housing the product prior to operably engaging the first and second enclosure portions.
- 15. A method according to claim 12 further comprising plasticizing the closing member about a point opposing the at least one aperture component.
- 16. A method according to claim 15 further comprising reshaping the closing member about the point, following plasticization thereof, so as to form the projection component such that the projection component is configured to operably engage the at least one aperture component.
- 17. A method according to claim 12 further comprising plasticizing the closing member about a point opposing the at least one opening with a heated die operably engaged with the closing member.
- 18. A method according to claim 17 further comprising reshaping the closing member about the point, following plasticization thereof, with a mechanism capable of engaging the closing member, so as to form the projection component, the projection component extending through the at least one aperture component, the mechanism comprising at least one of a heated member extending through the die and pressurized air introduced through the die.
- 19. A method according to claim 18 further comprising receiving a portion of the projection component extending through the at least one aperture component with a receiving die operably engaged with the second enclosure portion, the receiving die being configured to reshape the portion of the projection component extending through the at least one aperture component so as to form a retention lip.
- 20. A method according to claim 19 further comprising rigidifying the closing member about the point, the projection component, and the retention lip following formation of the retention lip.
- 21. A method according to claim 12 wherein the second enclosure portion further includes a peripheral flange defining the at least one aperture component and operably engaging the first enclosure portion with the second enclosure portion further comprises operably engaging the first enclosure portion to the peripheral flange of the second enclosure portion.
- 22. A method according to claim 12 wherein the first enclosure portion is configured to operably engage the second enclosure portion to form a generally parallelepiped enclosure and wherein the method further comprises forming a pair of cuts, each cut extending through at least one of the first enclosure portion and the second enclosure portion, the cuts being separated by a corner of the enclosure to thereby define the closing member as extending between the cuts and from each cut to the corner.
- 23. A method according to claim 22 further comprising scoring between the cuts so as to form a fold line, the closing member being pivotable about the fold line.
- 24. A method of forming a thermoformed recloseable flat package for a pill-like product, said method comprising:
operably engaging a first enclosure portion having a pivotable closing member with a second enclosure portion defining at least one lip component of a locking mechanism so as to form an enclosure for containing the product therein, each enclosure portion having a major surface such that the major surfaces of the respective enclosure portions are generally parallel when the first and second enclosure portions are operably engaged; forming a projection component of the locking mechanism from the closing member following formation of the enclosure, the projection component corresponding to, and configured to operably engage, the at least one lip component in an interference fit, with respect to pivoting of the closing member, to secure the closing member to the second enclosure portion, the projection component being further configured to be separable from the at least one lip component so as to allow separation thereabout of the closing member from the second package portion to thereby define the recloseable package capable of selectively allowing the product to be extracted from the enclosure.
- 25. A method according to claim 24 further comprising disposing the product within at least one of the first and second enclosure portions prior to operably engaging the first enclosure portion with the second enclosure portion.
- 26. A method according to claim 25 further comprising operably engaging a sealing member with the enclosure portion housing the product prior to operably engaging the first and second enclosure portions.
- 27. A method according to claim 24 further comprising plasticizing the closing member about a point generally opposing the at least one lip component.
- 28. A method according to claim 27 further comprising reshaping the closing member about the point, following plasticization thereof, so as to form the projection component such that the projection component is configured in an interference fit, with respect to pivoting of the closing member, with the at least one lip component.
- 29. A method according to claim 24 wherein the second enclosure portion further comprises a peripheral flange defining the lip component along an interior edge thereof and operably engaging the first enclosure portion with the second enclosure portion further comprises operably engaging the first enclosure portion with the peripheral flange of the second enclosure portion.
- 30. A method according to claim 29 further comprising plasticizing the closing member about a point generally opposing the at least one lip component with a heated die operably engaged with the closing member.
- 31. A method according to claim 30 further comprising reshaping the closing member about the point, following plasticization thereof, with a mechanism capable of engaging the closing member, so as to form the projection component, the projection component extending toward the second enclosure portion proximally to the interior edge of the peripheral flange, the mechanism comprising at least one of a heated member extending through the die and pressurized air introduced through the die.
- 32. A method according to claim 31 further comprising rigidifying the closing member about the point and the projection component following formation of the projection component.
- 33. A method according to claim 24 wherein the first enclosure portion is configured to operably engage the second enclosure portion to form a generally parallelepiped enclosure and wherein the method further comprises forming a pair of cuts, each cut extending through at least one of the first enclosure portion and the second enclosure portion, the cuts being separated by a corner of the enclosure to thereby define the closing member as extending between the cuts and from each cut to the corner.
- 34. A method according to claim 33 further comprising scoring between the cuts so as to form a fold line, the closing member being pivotable about the fold line.
- 35. A method of forming a thermoformed recloseable flat package for a pill-like product, said method comprising:
operably engaging a first package portion having a pivotable closing member with a peripheral flange of a second package portion so as to form an enclosure for containing the product therein, each enclosure portion having a major surface such that the major surfaces of the respective enclosure portions are generally parallel when the first and second enclosure portions are operably engaged; undercutting a portion of the peripheral flange corresponding to the closing member so as to form opposing first and second components of a locking mechanism, the components of the locking mechanism being operably engageable and configured in an interference fit, with respect to pivoting of the closing member, to secure the closing member to the second enclosure portion, the first and second components being further configured to be separable to as to allow separation thereabout of the closing member from the second enclosure portion to thereby define the recloseable package capable of selectively allowing the product to be extracted from the enclosure.
- 36. A method according to claim 35 further comprising disposing the product within at least one of the first and second enclosure portions prior to operably engaging the first enclosure portion with the second enclosure portion.
- 37. A method according to claim 36 further comprising operably engaging a sealing member with the enclosure portion housing the product prior to operably engaging the first and second enclosure portions.
- 38. A method according to claim 34 wherein undercutting a portion of the peripheral flange further comprises forming an angled cut in the peripheral flange such that a first part of the peripheral flange is operably engaged with the closing member and a second part of the peripheral flange includes an overhang generally overlying the first part of the peripheral flange.
- 39. A method according to claim 34 wherein the first enclosure portion is configured to operably engage the second enclosure portion to form a generally parallelepiped enclosure and wherein the method further comprises forming a pair of cuts, each cut extending through at least one of the first enclosure portion and the second enclosure portion, the cuts being separated by a corner of the enclosure to thereby define the closing member as extending between the cuts and from each cut to the corner.
- 40. A method according to claim 39 further comprising scoring between the cuts so as to form a fold line, the closing member being pivotable about the fold line.
- 41. A method according to claim 34 wherein undercutting a portion of the peripheral flange further comprises undercutting a portion of the peripheral flange using at least one of a cutting mechanism and a rule and die mechanism.
