Claims
- 1. A method for reorienting leading and following ones of elongate articles from an initial orientation wherein the leading and following ones of elongate articles are aligned in a first plane, and into a laterally alternating head-to-tail orientation to form an array of alternating head-to-tail oriented articles wherein the elongate articles lie in a side-by-side position in a second plane substantially perpendicular to said first plane, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) capturing respective head portions of leading and following ones of said elongate articles while in said initial orientation;
- (b) simultaneously laterally shifting said captured leading and following ones of said elongate articles relative to one another so that said captured leading and following ones of said elongate articles are misaligned with one another in a direction laterally to said first plane; and
- (c) simultaneously pivoting said laterally shifted leading and following ones of said elongate articles so that tail portions thereof swing toward one another until said articles are brought into said side-by-side position and thereby form said array of alternating head-to-tail oriented articles.
- 2. The method of claim 1, which comprises prior to step (a), the step of transporting said leading and following ones of elongate articles along a conveyance path.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein step (a) includes removing said captured leading and following ones of elongate articles from said conveyance path.
- 4. The method of claim 1, which further comprises:
- (d) moving a transfer tray below said array of alternating head-to-tail oriented articles; and
- (e) releasing said articles so that said array of alternating head-to-tail oriented articles falls by gravity into said transfer tray.
- 5. The method of claim 4, further comprising moving said transfer tray to a remote location.
- 6. The method of claim 5, further comprising removing said array of head-to-tail oriented articles from the transfer tray at said remote location.
- 7. The method of claim 6, further comprising retracting a movable bottom wall of the transfer tray so that said array of head-to-tail oriented articles falls by gravity therefrom and onto a transfer conveyor.
- 8. The method of claim 7, further comprising transporting said array of head-to-tail oriented articles on said transfer conveyor to a packaging station.
- 9. The method of claim 8, further comprising pushing said array of head-to-tail oriented articles as a unit from said transfer conveyor and into an awaiting empty package at said packaging station.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein said step of pushing includes bringing a push plate into contact with said array of head-to-tail oriented articles, and then moving said push plate laterally relative to said transfer conveyor so as to push said array of head-to-tail oriented articles into said empty package.
- 11. The method as in any one of claims 1-10, wherein the articles are frozen dessert cones.
