Claims
- 1. In the method of continuously casting metal product directly from molten metal in which the molten metal is confined and solidified in a casting region defined above and below by upper and lower cooled endless, flexible, traveling, casting belts supported by a plurality of upper back-up rollers and a plurality of lower back-up rollers in respective upper and lower belt carriages and laterally defined by first and second traveling side dams, the method of controlling belt shape comprising the step of:
- providing at least some bowable back-up rollers in both of said carriages,
- adjustably bowing at least some of said bowable back-up rollers in a first carriage and permitting said bowable back-up rollers in the second carriage to bow for urging the upper and lower belts toward contact with the cast metal product.
- 2. In the method of continuously casting metal product, the method of controlling belt shape as claimed in claim 1, including the further step of:
- remotely controlling the bowing of at least some of said bowable back-up rollers in said first carriage.
- 3. In the method of continuously casting metal product, the method of controlling belt shapes as set forth in claim 1 or 2 in which the step of adjustably bowing at least some of said bowable back-up rollers comprises:
- maintaining a center section of the bowable back-up rollers relatively more rigid than their end sections for shaping the casting belt and improving belt contact with the metal product being cast.
- 4. In the method of continuously casting metal product, the method of controlling belt shape as set forth in claim 1 or 2, wherein:
- bowable back-up rollers are bowed by approximately equal force-couples (bending moments) applied to respective stub-shaft levers located at each end of the bowable back-up rollers and connected to the ends of the bowable back-up rollers by bearing assemblies capable of transmitting the applied bending moments to the respective ends of these rollers.
- 5. In the method of continuously casting metal products, the method of controlling belt shape as set forth in claim 1, wherein:
- the bowable back-up rollers are slaved to transverse frame members, and
- the transverse frame members themselves are bowed for producing the desired bowing contour of said slaved rollers.
- 6. The method of controlling belt shape as claimed in claim 5, wherein:
- said transverse frame members are first transverse frame members each having a second transverse frame member generally parallel thereto and associated therewith,
- each such second transverse frame member being relatively more elastically bowable than the first frame member, and
- producing a bowing of the first frame member by bowing the second frame member for producing a determinate bowing of the first frame member.
- 7. The method of continuously casting metal product as set forth in claim 1, wherein:
- said casting belts are maintained generally parallel to each other along the upstream zone of the casting region, and
- said casting belts are converged slightly toward each other in the downstream direction in a subsequent zone of the casting region.
- 8. The method of continuously casting metal product as set forth in claim 7, wherein:
- said casting belts are converged slightly toward each other in the downstream direction in a middle zone of the casting region, and
- said casting belts are converged more rapidly toward each other in the downstream direction in a downstream zone of the casting region.
- 9. The method of casting metal product as claimed in claim 5 or 6, wherein:
- said casting belts are supported approximately parallel to each other in one longitudinal zone of the casting region, and
- said casting belts are converged toward each other in the downstream direction in a subsequent longitudinal zone of the casting region.
- 10. In a twin-belt continuous metal-casting machine having a pair of casting belts revolving around respective belt-supporting carriages for defining a casting region between the two belts, and wherein each of the carriages has a frame with main rolls located at opposite ends of the carriage for revolving the casting belt around the carriage, and wherein the casting belts are guided and supported by a plurality of finned back-up rollers each extending transversely against the casting belt adjacent to the casting region, the method of controlling the shape of the casting belt relative to the casting region comprising the steps of:
- selectively converging the casting belts toward each other for progressively narrowing the casting region from the upstream end thereof to the downstream end thereof,
- gradually converging the casting belts toward each other in an intermediate longitudinal zone of the casting region, and
- increasing the converging of the casting belts toward each other in a downstream zone located downstream from said intermediate zone.
