- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the gaultherin content of the gaultherin-containing composition is obtained in an amount of at least 15 mg gaultherin per gram fresh weight of plant tissue.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the individual is a mammal.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the individual is a human.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the gaultherin-containing composition is administered orally and causes less gastric irritation than an equivalent dose of acetyl salicylic acid as measured by the respective salicylate contents.
- 9. A method of treating a condition comprising:
administering a therapeutically effective amount of a gaultherin-containing composition to an individual, wherein the individual has a condition selected from the group consisting of an inflammatory response and a cardiovascular condition.

- 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the subject is a mammal.
- 12. The method of claim 9, wherein the subject is a human.
- 13. The method of claim 9, wherein the gaultherin-containing composition is administered orally and causes less gastric irritation than an equivalent dose of acetyl salicylic acid as measured by the respective salicylate contents.
- 14. A method of inhibiting the growth of a cancer cell comprising:
administering a therapeutically effective amount of a gaultherin-containing composition to an individual.
- 15. The method of claim 14, wherein the composition is administered parenterally.
- 16. The method of claim 14, wherein the composition is administered in combination with a second therapy used to treat cancer.
- 17. The method of claim 14, wherein the gaultherin containing composition is administered orally and causes less gastric irritation than an equivalent dose of acetyl salicylic acid as measured by the respective salicylate contents.
- 18. The method of claim 14, wherein the individual is a mammal.
- 19. The method of claim 14, wherein the individual is a human.
- 20. A method of inhibiting cyclooxygenase activity comprising:
administering a therapeutically effective amount of a gaultherin-containing composition to an individual.
